LesleyK , the plant will die down in the Autumn, so I place the pot somewhere to dry out a little, then move to the garage, no light or water needed until it pops up in the spring.

I grow Chocolate Cosmos in a container, then I move it into the garage for the winter.

It's just a bit of mildew, common at this time of year, don't worry about it they will be fine in the spring.

I think the darker wood is from the top layer of the pack that has been exposed to the weather, can you see the other side ? Is it a lighter colour?, the ''mildew / mould is probably residue from the treatment process.

The short variety I grow is called Goblin, it has always survived the winter for me.
