Just re-read what you wrote - "Need advice on plants to put at the side of a pond that you can walk on"
The last pond I dug out was edged with a combination of natural planting to soften/ hide the back/sides of the liner and big rocks. But because the pond was cut into the lawn, I saved some of the strips and used these to edge the front. Therefore, I was able to walk right up to the front and used this area for easy access, when, for example - maintenance was required.
I didn't want to use any kind of hard material like slabs which would spoil the natural look.
