Ground elder in compost bin

Posted: 22/03/2013 at 12:59

My compost base is heavy duty weed membrane, not the cheap stuff you can buy from wilkos/poundshop. The stuff that last for years, as opposed to months.

Although it doesn't stop the bindweed and marestail, it does help to reduce the level of attack. MY compost bins are double the size of your average bath and I have two of them, both homemade. Once a year the contents of both are emptied and any roots I find are removed.

Yeh, try blasting the area with weed killer and repeat the process if need be. Weeds are a pain.

The first Gardeners' World

There is a saying " you can't please all of the people, all of the time " or words to that effect.

I find nothing wrong with the programmes format, whether it was at greenacres, gretna green or at jersey.  ( yeh, I'm taking the water ) Nor do/did I have a problem with any of its presenters - daft, petty things like that don't bother me in this world of s***.

I take from the programme the information it gives and create my own ideas through it.

Example,

Monty Don lays a path. There is 20 thousand ways of laying a path, it is a 30 min programme, only one example can be shown, he does it his way.

You like the path, but don't like how it was done. HELLOOOO, research and find an alternative on the internet - the outcome will still be the same. Long gone are the days when research was only limited to the books in the library. The WWW is a marvelously bit of technology.

I used to work in catering and you would always get people saying, don't like your choice of pizzas. Yet. On the menu was a make your own topping !! Says it all.

Soil Problem

Hosta's and ferns like shade and look great when established. However, slugs/snails like Hosta's too, so some maintance maybe required.

Have you had a problem with ground elder growing inside the compost bin ?

Unstable young birch tree

Posted: 22/03/2013 at 09:28

There are a number of Birch Trees near where I live. Been there for a few years now.

All of them were double stalked either side with a flexible band holding the tree in place and still are. However, one or two of the bands have snapped and those trees are swaying somewhat.

Although not a tree expert, from my observations I'd say that some trees may need support for longer. If, the tree is not showing signs of distress I'd personally re-stalk or even double stalk it with some good solid supports - support at the bottom is offering no support at all really.

Messing around with the trees roots and uprooting is a recipe for disaster. I've on occasion uprooted things in the past, only for them to die not long after.

Trees are expensive, are they not ?

Strawberries

Every three years I compost the mother plant and replace with the runners - those plants you refer to as " more than one plant attached." Last years runners were potted up last autumn and stuck into the ground still in their pots. These are now ready to be planted into their new bed. The mother plant is now a year old. Plenty of life in her yet.

Once the plants become woody, the production in fruit reduces or become mis-shapen.

I can't even grow from seed!!!!!!!

When I'm watering seedlings I use a handheld spray bottle. I set to fine mist and spray until top surface of compost is moist, usually first thing morning. I check on the trays twice a day and if need be, water at tea-time. But NEVER at night.

This trick has always worked and at times I've had 50 or more trays going at any one time.

Yeah, my hand did get achy. hahaha
