what is eating my runner bean leafs?

Hi Paula,

I was a TOTAL beginner lst year and slugs did for much of my crops so I now add a circle of slug pellets around everything I plant out.

I would highly recommend the "How to" section on this site and You tube videos ( Just be sure they are not posted by someone in Australia! Also my "bible" is River Cottage Handbook No 4 "Veg Patch" by Mark Diacono It has an easy to follow one page a veg so you get just enough without overload. Good luck, enjoy and be warned it is an addictive.

Talkback: Preparing for drought in the garden

If things get serious I shall do what I did in the last big drought and collect the shower and bath water ( grey water) from the downpipe into a but and use for the garden straight away. Just be sure you don't store and drain off what you don't use each time.

Plant labelling

Perment marker fades much quicker than pencil on the plastic sticks but worked really well on wooden markers.

Get thrifty

I have kept my old bath tub and before winter filled it with the year old compost from my black plastic compost bins and all the tired compost in containers. Mixed it up and left covered in foam carpet underlay over wonter. I just uncovered it today and gave it a stir and it is teeming with lovely worms. Once tipped onto the garden there will be room to tip out all the kitchen compost from over winter and off we go again.
