HI CHARLEY D no experience with sternbergias but if they are new bulbs like dafs they don't flower first year, as for the compost my thought is that if the bulbs say it's warm enough to grow  they will grow through the compost and still flower, you can't hold nature back in the garden but you can in temperature controlled environments

Escallonia sounds good but if you like to keep a tidy bush and trim it regular you won't see many flowers on it, as it flowers on the new growth and cutting it will keep the flowers off

Have 2 ready to flower in the Isle of Man, v strange as their 100 brothers and sisters in the garden are only just showing a growth!

Hi Chris, I am a favourite to copper beech, might take a while to grow but keeps its leaves all year round with a change of colour, and not hard to maintain, if you go for a quick growing bush remember it will always need cutting slow growers  needs less
