The best onions from seed.....

Posted: 15/01/2016 at 08:46

Thanks both.  I will prick them out this weekend.  At work now so can't do it today!  They are at home by the window.  Once pricked out would you put them in the greenhouse (not heated) or keep them inside for now.  Mr Frost arrived over night, so I am worried if I put them in the greenhouse it may be too cold!

The best onions from seed.....

I sowed onion seeds (using an electric propegator) for the first time between Christmas & New Year.  They are still in the propegator, but during the day I take the lids off.  They are 2 - 3 inches long and look like chives!  Is this normal, at what stage do I prick them out?  Any help hugely appreciated!!

How do you grow large garlic bulbs

Posted: 28/07/2015 at 15:47

Hi all - how do you grow large garlic?  This is my 3rd year of growing it, and its slightly bligger than last year, but not impressive at all.  I thought this was going to be the year, but sadly no.  How much fertilizer do you put in the soil?  We've been using chicken fertilizer, but not on a regular basis.  I've planted various Autumn varieties and they all grow the same, small!!  Any hints and tips hugely appreciated.

Hi all, I have a trellis that is adjacent to our house.  It only gets partial sun.  I've tried clematis and didn't have success, can't remember the variety.  Apart from clematis, any suggestions.  I think it needs to be very hardy.   Any help hugely appreciated.  I would love a rose, but would one survive??

What to plant under 2 small apple trees

Posted: 17/03/2014 at 14:05

Hello!  We inherited two smallish apple trees at the end of our allotment.  I would like to make use of the ground under the apple trees.  The soil is fairly dry.  I don't want to grow other fruits in that space.  Are there any herbs, or flowers that would tolerate the two apple trees.  Any ideas would be hugely appreciated!  Thanks

Thank you both, I will certainly have thick gloves and heavy clothing on as I expect I will be scratched from head to toe!  I particularly like the Bindweed tip.

Morning all,  first post on here, so please be gentle.  9 days ago we took over an overgrown allotment and have inherited a huge gooseberry bush, probably 5ft high.  Very overgrown with bindweed, stray raspberries, couch grass and I am sure there will be other vegitation lurking amongst it. I am going to attack it this weekend.  What's the best form of attack?  Any suggestions hugely appreciated!
