Soil Preperation

Thanks Verdun, prompt, sound advice as per. Could you please clarify 'a spits depth'. Incidentally, I did dig in some well rotted horse manure before winter.

Soil Preperation

I have cleared an area for new planting this year and was wondering what is the best prep for the soil. Should I be digging something in or is it too early at the moment.Thank you.

Grr, don't get me started,  I too find overhanging trees and bushes very irritating . Every day I encounter some sort of obstacle like this. I am not just talking about a couple of inches of overhang, I am talking feet, also, in some places, nasty thorny examples such as Pyracantha. My mum is partially sighted which is why I get particularly heated on this subject. Sorry folks ..... and breathe .....

Could anyone recommend a nice colourful, fragrant Lavender ( and where to purchase  if online) please? I have chalky soil.

Thankyou

How to deal with moss??

Posted: 17/01/2016 at 11:16

I have a problem with moss in my garden, but it isn't just in the lawn. It appears in pots, borders and even grows up trees and a railway sleeper 'wall' !! I know people say that this is to do with not enough light but I am hardly steeped in darkness! I don't understand it.  Please could you advise how I may remedy this.

Thankyou

Thank you so much for your interesting replies and amazing pics.  Verdun and Keenongreen how do you get your shapes? I am guessing many years of experience. Did you learn by using frames originally? I Will have to treat myself a LB Gold and a starter frame. Any ideas of a good supplier for those? Thanks

Hi everyone, having mentioned wanting to buy a Pittosporum recently and being told they were good for topiary, it got we wondering what other shrubs/trees might be good for it. Also, I was wondering if many of you do any topiary as I would love to see pics and would be interested to know how easy/difficult it is ? I am not thinking of creating animals or anything like that but just to be able to keep something in shape would be good!  I can't even keep my buxus balls spherical!

Thanks Dove, Sorry I thought I read they grew much bigger than that! but if Verdun says they are happy being kept, then that should be fine. It is just my usual problem of putting things up on my 'banked' area where they are already up on a three foot high wall so I have to factor that in, otherwise it's all going on on top (if you see what I mean)    Thanks to Verdun also.
