unidentified pest eggs

Posted: 05/06/2012 at 15:14

when harvesting some salad for yesterday's dinner i turned over a spinach leaf to find these eggs. well i assume they're eggs? the piccy is a bit blurry i'm afraid. they're bright green (almost fluorescent) round balls that are spiralled into a perfect hexagon shape. each ball is smaller than a pin head, the whole hexagon is smaller than a 5p coin.  it's rather stunning to find it but i am concerned that it may be an unwelcome pest. anyone know what this is?

many thanks

WHITE LEAVES

ahah, thanks for your advice. As you say it's not an exact science and i'm learning as i go along with a bit of trial and error. the temp thing makes sense as i planted them out in the hot weather we had before the temps dropped. should i cover them with a closh until it warms up again? not sure if it's better for them to enjoy this rain water or be warm.

thanks again for your help

WHITE LEAVES

hi

can anyone tell me why cabbages (red and white) and tomatoes planed in pots using multi-purpose compost would turn the leaves white and what i could do to rescue them?

i thought it may be a nutrient related problem but in brand new compost i'm not sure. it's worse in the cabbages than the tomatoes. the cabbages were bought as seedlings and the tomatoes i grew from seeds. the tomatoes were fine until they went outside.

also, can anyone point me in the direction of pictures of how to pinch out tomatoes? it always confuses me!

many thanks

weed, plant or veggie?

thanks very much both of you we'd spent hours searching the net but as it had no flowers couldn't identify it.

think we'll move to a more useful place in the flower bed rather than centre stage in the veggie patch. is it one of those that justs keeps spreading and taking over the space or would it sit ok amongst other plants?

weed, plant or veggie?

Posted: 13/05/2012 at 16:05

we've found a couple of these growing in our garden veggie patch. when small they looked similar to our potato plants however now they're much bigger they don't look anything like potato plants. we've had a lot of seeds move round the garden caused by the wind, animals etc. to the extent of a patch of our lawn being full of parsnips! so i don't want to assume this plant is a weed and just dig it up to find it was actually something edible. i don't want to leave it if it is a weed as it's taking water and nutrients from the other veggie plants. please help!

hopefully the pictures help (coming soon) but the plant has red stems and stalks. leaves are green with a slight purple edge. there are 3 separate leaves on each stem.

thanks
