Wild life and my ponds

Posted: 05/06/2015 at 15:19

I have one large and one small tin bath on my small patio. I dont know what I am doing wrong but the plants dont thrive well and i do not attract any pond life .Both are on my south facing patio, which may be the problem. The water I have cleaned out this year as they were full of green gunge all over the plants . Put some pond straw liquid in to keep them clear which has improved the plants to some degree and i am wondering now if i need something else to keep it clear or different plants. My smaller pond has a very small solar fountain in it the other has non and the small one has a sick looking lily plant that does not look like it will flower again this year . I must be doing something wrong and would like help to remedy this any one . Have lots of wild flowers and bees and the garden is doing well its just my ponds that are suffering

Talkback: How to make a mini-pond

Read the article on tin bath water gardens and found it really helpful. I made one my self but had no advise and now know how to make it better. Mine has yucky gunge all over it and I am about to clean it out and now know how to keep it better and even though its a small bath it has done well considering my lack of knowledge. Will be off to find the right compost for a start and water baskets and an aerating plant to sweeten up the water. Just need to find a good water garden supplier near me. Just glad I found this article If any one knows of a good water garden centre near Coventry  please let me know.

Orange bubbly mould on tree stump

Posted: 07/05/2014 at 12:58

Wish I had taken a photo of it but was so horrified to see it I just took the leaves off and disposed of them if any more returns I  will take pic and send in . Never seen anything like this before in my garden appeared over the weekend when I was away. It was very bright orange definitely like blisters in the middle of my  rose only .I don't think its rust as from pics I've looked at rust is small spots , but I am not an expert .so will spray again and hope it stops it in its tracks

Help please I have just picked off leaves covered in bright orange fungus type spots which were on my climbing rose. Its not on everything just one area so disposed of the offending leaves in general rubbish bin no sign of dead wood .Never seen it before and I did spray recently for black spot with an organic type fungus and bug spray. Hope someone knows what it is  or is it as mentioned coral spot and how do I treat it

changing garden around

Two queries I need help with  please.

Changing my West facing border I want to remove a conifer tree which is outgrowing its space and I wish to move a lovely big pieris which has outgrown the front of a border and move it back to the fence, When is the best time to do this and will it transfer well without dying? Its good and healthy.

I would like to put an apple tree by my sunny fence and only have space for one small upright tree as my garden is quite small  so space is a premium what would you advise as it appears most trees I've seen seem to suggest I need two for pollination , they did have a limited selection . Does this mean its not such a good idea or would I benefit from looking further afield for varieties. any help or advise would be welcome.

help me identify a plant /weed please

Posted: 20/07/2013 at 15:52

I have a small  plant  which is covering my garden its not unpleasant and almost acts as a filler between plants . It has light, green airy  leaves with tiny pink flowers .Grows about  12 inches max. I had a few last year but this year there every where . They are helpful at the moment giving shade to my hot borders but i think I may have difficulty controlling them . I like wild flowers but there seems a lot of these this year  and one or two low growing plants have been a bit swamped . I keep pulling them up but they keep coming back . I think i may have aquired it on the back of another plant i bought last year . Wish i could send photo but will have to wait till someone can assist me .Im not too good on techy things. Does anyone recognise this description . If not i will try and send pics  again soon .

Jasmine problem

My  jamine album was doing really nicely and was large and lush when the last frost came it killed of all the green growth. I cut out the dead growth and left the stems that seemed to have some green showing . Although i did this there is no sign of any new shoots. Should i cut it right back to the ground , leave it as it is or dig it up . This plant has been in two years and was doing really well. Any suggestions would be welcome
