Slugs and snails

Slugs and snails are still making a meal of my dahlias so I wonder if I should apply nematodes now or wait until spring.

Small tree for front garden

Is Amelanchier the snowy mespilus?  I'm also looking for a small tree for our front garden and saw this in the local garden centre but I want to be sure it won't cause any root problems either by spreading towards the house or poking up through the lawn.

Talkback: Evicting a rat

We occasionally get an influx of rats - my husband feeds the birds and doesn't mind the rats, he won't have it that they carry disease!  At this present time, we're not seeing any at all but when we do there are plenty!  Neighbours cats are now welcome in our garden as are the foxes.  We have plenty of magpies who attack the rats when they are around and I believe they occasionally kill the young ones just for sport!  I have to say I find the rats very amusing at times.  They are very intelligent but the disease issue does bother me.  All the bird feeders are now restricted to the bottom of the garden which backs onto a conservation area so we're bound to get a variety of wildlife.

Damson tree

I had 10lbs of fruit from this old tree last year - a bumper crop in comparison to previous years.  It had lots of blossom again this year but no fruit developed and it had sap seeping from all over the trunk and branches - and very few leaves.  I wonder if it has just come to the end of it's life as it was well established when we moved here 16 years ago so I've no idea how old it is.  Should we hard prune it or just remove it altogether?
