Supprot for Solanum glasnevin?

Posted: 10/03/2015 at 16:26

I had a big tree removed a few weeks ago which has left quite a gap. (The bulk of the tree had fallen a few years ago, I though ti was leaving the trunk but decided it was dangerous and best removed).

Today I found / remembered I had planted a solanum glasnevin to climb up it. Now it has started it's growth spurt and I need suggestions what will be strong enough to support it?

It is near to a fence, but I don't think that will hold it.

There are conifers nearby ( 60-90cm away each side) which I expect it will reach in time, so maybe a temporary measure until it gets there? How would it affect clipping/pruning the conifers?

There is a newly planted Amelanchier in front of it, would this work?

Would an arch or trellis be better, if so any suggestions which are strong enough?

Thank you.

Clari - when you've finished driving around in your  firemobile can you send your kitchen cleaning explosion this way...and one for the lounge, for the bedroom oh and a couple for the bathroom too.

Matty, I've been tempted more than a few times by a silver birch, shadow sounds good. hope delivery isn't too expensive.

no gardening done but home early, swings and roundabouts, must cross fingers for better weather tomorrow.

Time to get FIL a bottle of something (thank you gift for hacking a big branch of the apple tree as OH watched on in disapproval) and then to pick son up - who incidently (for those who remember my woes of yesteryear )is actually as lovely as everyone else says now.

Nasty frost here too, didn't expect that . As you say Dove, there's a lovely burst of sunshine finding it's way through.

Ive got my first bite of the year! And I don't mean frost bite! Some mini beast seems to have taken a liking to my ankle.

Morning.
So that was why OH found out a film to watch last night (Poldark avoidance).
Enjoy your planning Clari, remember the photos..
Is it really cosmos time already chicky? My GH has turned into a shed so maybe that should be a priority in order to get some seeds going.
Off tomorrow, and not one thing in the diary (months since that happened). Unfortunately there are loads of jobs to catch up on...I'll not be relaxing but maybe feel better for getting through some stuff n backlog etc.
must get on...

Happy birthday Liri, glad you enjoyed lunch.

been looking at dogwood Verd but think I'm gonna be sensible as I've not really got room.... famous last words. Also the Salix flamingo is giving a similar effect so I may go for a ground cover variety, to plant with red robin and that damned awful yellow helebore.

I've still not come up with the right idea for where the 'big fallen tree' was. Trying to leave it until I've seen summer through.

Cut off and tidied a few more branches from Apple tree, thanks for advice on here and money on Friday.

White camellia Carolyn (?) almost popping a bud ( it was an Xmas present and again no idea where to put it).

Lots of grasses in the 'feather bed' which i thought were annuals but seem to be happy...?
