Great thanks for the ID

I'll have to try and get hold of some myself. They look good against the red valerian.

Thanks again

Hi folks, Can anyone identify these flowers for me. They're growing by the side of a field where I'm staying on holiday on the Isle of Wight, they're very pretty with lots of yellow pollen which I'm sure the bees would love. Cheers James http://s697.photobucket.com/user/requiemphotos/media/Mobile%20Uploads/image.jpg.html http://s697.photobucket.com/user/requiemphotos/media/Mobile%20Uploads/image_1.jpg.html

What have I planted? Plant ID please.

Ahh I think you may be right! I just remembered I bought a rather expensive bulb by the checkout at the garden centre last year as an impulse buy. I seem to remember having to bury it on its side to stop it rotting. God my memory is bad! I'd totally forgotten about it. Shame it's come up blind, I suppose it's only it's first year in its new home, perhaps it needs to bed in this year. Thanks for the ID folks, I'd never had fathomed it myself.

Cheers

James

Slug and Snail slime

You need to dry it up, adding water only seems to make the stuff multiply. I use either talc or a spoonful of flour on my hands and just rub it away. After most of it has gone, then I wash with antibacterial soap and a nail brush.

When should I plant out my Verbena Bonariensis?

I'm in the south, in Dorset. I'm pretty sure it said to leave them standing until the spring but I can't be certain. I'll see if I can find where I read it.

Flowers on the beach

Thanks for the ID! They weren't on a particularly quiet beach, just a bit further down from the main hoi polloi, so I was a bit surprised to see them there. Nature always finds a way to survive, even with humans around playing frisby.

Sounds like once they find somewhere they like, they positively thrive. I hope they like my garden then. I looked up what to do over winter and it says online to mulch them with straw just to protect them a bit so I might do that with these first ones until I'm confident in letting them fend for themselves.

Thanks for all the advice.

Who knows their roses?

I'm no rose expert but I recently bought a Gertrude Jekyll and it does have a lovely 'classic English rose' fragrance and look but I agree, a pic is really needed for the pros on here.

Flowers on the beach

Hi guys, I was walking along down on the beach earlier and noticed a cluster of little flowers on the sand. They're very pretty and look to be some sort of succulent. It's quite an extreme environment they are living in, they weren't on a dune or anything, just on the dry sand and they seem happy enough. Any idea what they are?

I wasn't sure about sowing from seed as I'm a bit of a novice in regard to flower seeds. I'm branching out from growing veg this year as I wanted a bee and butterfly bed so I bought a load of seeds including annuals like corncockle, scabiosa, borage, phacelia and salvia as well as the verbenas. I ended up with dozens of plants of which the verbenas are the last to leave the greenhouse. However, now the tomatoes, chillis and cape gooseberries are taking over!
