What's eating my olive?

Posted: 03/07/2014 at 15:04

Hi folks,

Any idea what's eating my olive tree? I noticed a few holes in the leaves last year but the tree seemed fine, however, this year there are a lot more holes and the tree looks a bit sad (yellow leaves). I'm not sure if the two things are connected so I'd like your opinion.

Cheers

James

Any idea of Rose Variety?

Thanks for all the replies. I'm so pleased to have an answer as I've wondered ever since I was a nipper (I was that kind of boy). It's certainly a lovely rose and I've just made some new cuttings so I'm sure it will go on for some decades to come.

Thanks again, it's really appreciated.

Hi folks, is the conclusion that it's New Dawn then? I can get some more pics if it helps.

Thanks for all the replies, bit overwhelmed there have been so many! I've had Albertine and I'm pretty sure it's not that, it's not as pink nor as umm messy looking in the petal formation. It does look more like New Dawn. Shropshire Lad looks a bit compact to me. Here's another pic of an older flower head.

Any idea of Rose Variety?

Bit of a long shot I know but I'd like to identify the variety of a climbing rose I have had for over thirty years. It was originally growing up an old victorian cottage I grew up in in Surrey and I imagine it was probably as old as the house was. When I moved, I took some cuttings, one of which is thriving in my new garden but I have never known what rose it is. It is a pale pink but the petals seem to turn white as they age, it has a mild scent and the leaves are small and rounded. Can anyone help?

Cheers

Alternatives to chemical fungicide

I read last year that a full fat milk and water solution has been tested at vineyards to combat powdery mildew and works as well as other nonorganic chemical methods. I haven't tried it myself but sounds like an easy and cheap solution and certainly worth trying.

Thanks, I'm pretty sure they are the wood avens seeds. I'll have to look out for them when I'm next on a walk. She's had burrs from goosegrass and thistles which are a real pain to get out but these are new to me and really go deep against the skin. Thanks again for the ID.

Hi folks,

My dog had some seeds in her fur the other day. They look nasty and was making her itch. I'd like to avoid where these come from but I've walked her various places so not sure how. I'd really appreciate it If anyone can shed light on what might have produced them.

Cheers

James

Slugs

Posted: 17/06/2014 at 23:36

I have terrible problems with slugs and snails. I have tried most things but I've had most success in going out with a torch at midnight collecting them up to take for a walk over the park the next morning. What's I've discovered is once a slug finds a plant, he'll revisit that plant every night until the plant is dead, ignoring everything else. The only real answer is to remove the slug from the equation. I also use oats in my greenhouse to some success, I don't put them in the garden as I have a small rat problem.
