seeding for a medow

Posted: 21/07/2014 at 20:34

I removed all thick lumps of grasses, dug out the extensive nettle root system, bramble roots & dandelions from my fifth acre plot.

I seeded my first patch 3x 5m last fall with seeds from "BOSTON Seeds" & all grew well.

Then seeded the second patch 3x6m with same seeds but this time hundreds of small nettles appeared everywhere amongst the wild flowers.

These nettles have their individual fine small roots. I puled out a lot where I could reach without standing on the other plants.

Do I leave these to grow & take over the plot?

This particular patch is the area where no nettles ever grew in the past, perhaps because of the thick clamps of grass.

Have you experienced this too?

My daughter says that maybe the seeds include nettles which are good for wild life??!!.

Thank you       ......Nick

This dig-over & ground-cleared for corn poppies,  will it not destroy the other seeds of the mix I used?

Craky, perish the thought of turning over the soil, of the quarter acre I will end up with, every winter, 85 is not a good year for this.

And grass, what grass?, I dug it all out, a ton of huge lumps, hoping the sawn flowers will keep it out.     ....nick

Thanx all, and stop moaning, its my keyboard's fault.

Is very helpful to hear what happens to others as I have never seen or noticed before all these plants that must be around in hedges.

I just dug out the thick grass from a third 4x5m patch. & if it keeps cool & wet I may sow some more seeds.

The second patch I did 5-10 days ago shows hundreds of tiny leaves already.

Having little else to do I get anxious about all these things so I better leave it to nature that does it best.         .........nick

Thanx Jim,

point taken, & another thing these Boston seeds I was given they do not say if they are Perennial, which I would prefer instead of plant every year.

So I wonder what should I do end of summer or next year, do I moan them down or what happens?       ......nick

Hi  again,

My  Borage, Corn Cockle & the only one Poppy are rather tall (nearly a meter) & topple needing support. Is this normal or my sowing was wrong & did not plant the seeds deep enough, but how.

Also the Y.Rattles seem spindly with very small flowers, are they so usually?

My wife mocks me with "....perhaps you planted the seeds upside-down....*$@#%.,"

Thank            ...........nick

I went this evening down there, sunny & breezy all day, & found 3 of the plants have flowers at the top. It is" Corn Cockle" as you suspected after I compared it with a picture on the net.

Most of the flufies blew off in the stiff breeze, & new ones are appearing with new leaves at the top, they are not feathers as are integral to the root of leaves.

Also a lot of Y.Rattle sprung up & have tiny yellow flowers.

Thanx all,

Flufies grow on all of these plants, I will remove one & show you.

Are all the bubble bees (15-20) so small because they are young?, not one large one appeared yet.

Hope is not a disease          ..........nick

I started to create a medow with wild flower seeds purchased.

First patch of my plot (6x3m) grew a lot, most prominent & the only one flowering & atracting a lot of "very small" bubblebees is Borac, some tiny Yellow Rattle, and this tall to my chest, long leafed with the white Fluffy things on its every notch up its stem.

Anybody knows what it is?, I could not locate it on the net.

In between showers now I cleared the thick grass from the second patch (6x4m) & seeded it with same as the first patch. Hope they germinate this late 20th May 14.

Thanx              ...........nick
