Who ate all the carrots?

Posted: 21/06/2012 at 21:04

Not sure about the pidgeons but slugs will get through a row af carrot seedlings in a night! I've prevented the birds eating my kale by stretching twine across the area tied to bamboo canes, much like people do with wire over their ponds to keep the herons at bay, so you could try that. Are the others planted near onions, garlic or leeks because, apparently, slugs are put off by those.

Do the centipedes eat slugs?

Slugs and snails - help needed!!

Posted: 21/06/2012 at 20:54

I have a similar problem, having recently moved into a new house built on ground uncultivated for about 100 years! I do a morning hunt with a plant pot lined with kitchen roll and salt, they don't like that!!! I've also started keeping my coffee grounds and egg shells which I place around vulnerable plants (in my case mostly veg at the mo), along with beer traps laced with salt, a sprinkling of slug pellets and a dosing of Nemaslug!!! As you can guess, I'm going for total, all out, nucleur attack! Apparently, growing alliums around vulnerable plants also puts them off which is probably why my beetroot and kale are doing well, whilst my french beans are being decimated.

Ants?

In my experience, which is, unfortunately, annual, they seem to start off on the lower leaves and have a nasty habit of letting go the minute you touch the plant so, as Lokelani says, they can be hard to spot. Best to wait until tomorrow and you'll find them easier in the daylight. Take lots of kitchen roll with you to put the young in as they are really gross and slimy! Happy squashing
