Perhaps a Survey worth doing...

Posted: 19/12/2014 at 16:32

I've just completed the survey - be interesting to see what happens next, it may still be that my garden doesn't fit the bill but I bet there are hundreds of gardens affected by drought/flooding.

Bossy Birds!

Posted: 19/12/2014 at 16:06

Here it is one of a pair of nuthatches that whizzes up and down all the feeders clearing everything else away until the gs woodpeckers arrive then he eats away quite peacefully with all the other birds as they return. I have 1 robin that pushes another robin away but tolerates all other birds and a chaffinch that does the same - only objects to other chaffinches.

That's one terrifying pigeon Edd!

Fallen leaves on veg beds

A very timely question/answers for me - I'd been wondering the same thing as Tenorbrew. Great advice - although my nearest neighbour is almost a quarter of a mile away so no garden vacs for me.

Mole hills

Oh what a relief - you let him go, I was reading your post with such anxiety. I have moles in my garden too sometimes but bank voles were far more of a problem this year, they damaged my shallot and onion crops quite badly.

Grass cutting

Ah yes sthldngrower that's exactly what happened to me last year - an absolute nightmare of long grass and tussocks plus all the seed heads etc. Of course since I posted my question it's been raining every day but I'm hoping to get out there as soon as a dry day appears.

Thanks everyone for your help.

Bonfire ash

That's good advice, thanks all. I've just read that it is best to keep it covered or you lose the nutrients.

Bonfire ash

Posted: 04/12/2014 at 17:14

I burn all paper and cardboard that I can't compost (due to volume). Nothing else is burnt with it other than the odd bit of plant material, if diseased for example.

I was wondering whether I can add the ash to anything - like compost heap or directly onto the ground? Seems a shame to just waste it.

Anyone got any suggestions please?

Grass cutting

Posted: 04/12/2014 at 08:58

I haven't been able to cut my grass for a while because of the wet weather. I would like to give it a last cut before winter really sets in but am a bit worried I might do more harm than good. So my questions are -

Is it ok to cut now? (on the highest setting) Will the grass suffer if there's a frost in the next few days?

chocolate--spot-on-beans

My broad beans have chocolate spot, I usually leave bean roots in the ground to rot down but should I lift and destroy them instead? I don't know whether the pest can survive over winter in the ground.
