alterrnative to fruit tree banding

Posted: 29/10/2014 at 14:38

Hello everyone

I have a very big, old apple tree which I have pruned into shape so that the fruit is more easier to reach.  However, I think it also needs some sort of coverage round the base trunk to stop insects climbing up during the winter.  Banding doesn't get into the recesses of the bark.  Is there a cheap alternative of a wash of some sort I can buy or make to do the trick?  Ideas much appreciated

Many thanks

Hello everyone

I have lots of Lucifer crocosmia which have finished flowering now.  Should I cut back all the foliage - or leave it to die back naturally.  Thanks

Hello again Marco & Lyn

I followed your advice & now have almost double the amount of drumstick primulas.  I'm really delighted!  Thanks again.

Many thanks Marco & Lyn for the advice.  I'll have a go at that.  I was quite concerned about killing them off, by trying to divide at the wrong time of year.

Hello  one & all

When is the best time to divide my drumstick primulas.  I put some in the garden about a year ago, and now they are looking quite 'clumpy'. But I don't want to disturb them until I can safely divide them without damaging them  All info appreciated.  Thanks.  Nikki7

Many thanks chrissieB.  Well, that sounds simple enough!.  But I hope they do re-post it again.  I must have missed that posting.

Anyone have any ideas on when & how to propogate a fatsia japonica from cuttings?  Many thanks

Thanks once again to both of you.  The tips are very much appreciated.  And I particularly like the improvising of kitchen/toilet roll centres to use as root trainers.  That's a really good idea!  Thanks again.

Thanks for the tips Johntheeng & Johnharding.  The kitchen paper method & root trainer, sound like really good ideas.  That way I will get to know if the seeds are viable or not - instead of wasting months waiting for them to show themselves through the soil where I've sown them.

I have already tried again & put some more parsnip seeds in the soil,  (Yes I know it's very late now - but what have I got to lose?)

Anyway, many thanks again for the tips. I shall definitely use them in the future.
