penstemon cuttings - too late?

Posted: 08/07/2013 at 00:50

Thanks very much for your replies, fidgetbones & Verdun.  (I have already taken lots of perennial fuschias successfully using the plastic bag method).  I just love taking cuttings!!  Many of them end up in friends gardens as well as my own.  I also took several cuttings of a surfinia which I bought from the garden cantre for £1 while small.  Now I have seven plants!  (Love a bargain)!

penstemon cuttings - too late?

Posted: 07/07/2013 at 11:56

Hello again everyone.

Is it too late to take penstemon cuttings?  I have a lovely red flowering one which I'd like to increase in number.  So - is it the usual procedure of cutting below a leaf node (of a non flowering shoot), dipping in hormone powder and putting in a pot with a see- through plastic bag over the top?  Thanks to all & any replies

carrots

Hello Lyn & greenfingeredsmoggy

Yes they are not too bunched up.  And I have grown them before with success - so it's a bit of a mystery.  Thanks for the tip Grennfingeredsmoggy.  I'll try the phospherous fertiliser you suggest for root development.  (If all else fails, there's always next year to try again).  That's gardening, you win some - you lose some!  Thanks once again everyone.

Many thanks for the replies folks.  I've only pulled a couple so far and the actual carrot was tiny!,  (And also because I didn't want to get them invaded by the deaded carrot fly).  But - I will keep my fingers crossed & try again in about a weeks time.  I'll let you know the results then.

Hi everyone

Any idea as to why my carrots (which I sowed in March), have such tall & luscious foliage - but tiny little carrots when pulled?  Very disappointing.

Something to block out sound of neighbours voice!

Things could be so much worse 'rodgy dodge'.  I have the neighbours from HELL!  When I moved in here alone, almost ten years ago, next door had a karaoke machine, which they sang on late at night - full blast.  Also, while she has a mouth like a fog-horn, he is a total fantasist & boasts & brags about being a company director, (in reality he's a salesman) and is the joke of the whole street.  Frequent parties occurred with their mates shouting, banging doors, etc.  The dog was left alone in the house all day, barking & howling.  Initially, I tried being diplomatic & tactful, then I got angry with them because they showed NO consideration whatsoever.  Finally we got to the point where we were hurling insults & abuse over the fence. Refusing to be a helpless woman, I gave them a bit of their own medicine by making noise - and was threatened by Mr Big Shot!!  (Not sure if I spelled that right).  Anyway, I kept a diary for a while & then went to the police and the local council.  The police involvement was brilliant!  And the outcome is that things are much quieter now - In fact they are up for sale!!  Hallelujah!!  Now, I don't recommend you do the same & retaliate like I did, because it has been a horrible experience.   But what I do say is, it could be so much worse!  So, don't move!!  You have a lovely garden.  Just pray that if & when MY neighbours do move, it's not near to you!!  Good luck!

Many thanks 'fidgetbones'.  Really appreciate the information.  I'm off to take some cuttings now - and hopefully have some success this time!  Thanks again

Hello one & all

I have a lovely tall ceanothus in full flower at the moment and would like to take some cuttings.  Has anyone got any advice on doing so - or had any success taking them?  I've tried but without success before.  My questions are:-  Do I take the cutting with a heel or just below a leaf node?  Do I use hormone rooting powder?  Do I cover the cuttings with a plastic bag?  All & any answers very much appreciated.

Gooseberries

I really like the sound of gooseberry wine BobThe Gardner & Verdun.  Do you have the recipe?  I still have gooseberries in the freezer from last year, so wouldn't mind having a go at that.   Cheers!

fuschia cuttings

Many thanks to you all for the replies.  Pleased to hear that it is a hardy variety.  I think the thing to do is to put some plants from the cuttings in the ground and  overwinter others in the greenhouse - just to be on the safe side!!  Thanks again
