parsnips seedlings

Posted: 24/05/2014 at 08:58

Thanks for the tips Johntheeng & Johnharding.  The kitchen paper method & root trainer, sound like really good ideas.  That way I will get to know if the seeds are viable or not - instead of wasting months waiting for them to show themselves through the soil where I've sown them.

I have already tried again & put some more parsnip seeds in the soil,  (Yes I know it's very late now - but what have I got to lose?)

Anyway, many thanks again for the tips. I shall definitely use them in the future.

Hello again

Thanks for the replies.  Yes, Italophile the seeds were this years - so very surprised no results at all!  Previously I have had great succes with growing them & excellent results.  I usually use Gladiator f1 which are a good quality seed.  Anyway, I've put some more in and keeping my fingers crossed.  I had a word with one or two other allotmenteers and they are having a similar problem?  Oh well, there's always next year.  Thanks again

parsnips seedlings

Hello folks

In March I planted out my parsnip seeds as usual - and previously I've had great success growing them.  However, this year not one of them appears to have grown!  The three rows of seeds is totally bare of any sign of them.  Anyone have any ideas ideas what could have caused this?

Hello again fidgetbones

Thanks very much once again for the info on ceanothus cuttings.  I will give it another go. I live on the Foxhill Road in Carlton - and you?  Also, I have an allotment plot on the Robin Hood Allotments, which is on Cavendish Road.  Small world eh!

Many thanks everyone for your responses.  I always assumed that there was a lot of goodness in animal manure - which fed plants.  I have now been enlightened!  Thanks again.

Hiya one & all

A friend supplies me with rabbit manure, which consists of droppings & straw.  I build this up in a bin made of pallets and it appears to be doing some good to the soil in my garden  Does anyone know how rabbit manure compares in 'goodness' for the soil, compared to horse, cow, or other animal manures?  Thanks

How to attract bees into polytunnel

How's about a lavender plant in a pot?  Also echinops - which the bees adore!  I have some in my garden & the echinops flowers are constantly covered in bees.  Either plants could be grown in pots & put in the tunnel to attract bees during the summer season

feeding leeks later in the year?

Posted: 30/03/2014 at 20:48

Many thanks for the replies folks.  Maybe it was just a bad year for leeks?  But as they do have a very long growing season, I may well add a bit of chicken manure pellets late on - if they aren't doing too well.  Thanks again.   Nicki 7

feeding leeks later in the year?

Posted: 29/03/2014 at 15:38

Hello everyone

Last year I had a miserable outcome from my leeks, which were small & spindly - despite digging in plenty of well rotted manure in the soil previous to planting them.  To ensure I get a better crop this year my question is, do I need to feed them again, later in the year?  And if so, with what kind of feed.  Many thanks for your replies

Garlic growing

Many thanks Bob.  Will put them under a cloche for a while - though my garden isn't too waterlogged.  The soil drains really well.    Appreciate the advice.
