Freecycle , amazing what you can get on  there for free large planks to make raised beds , garden canes well rotted manure and nice and ornate pots had all of these this year for my garden for free. Missed out on five oak barrells planted up with strawberrys but ho hum its deffinatly worth watching . Saved a fortune on petrol going to the tip getting people to take away the junk from my garden on freecycle as well.

Chilli peppers!!!

So jealous of these big chilli plants. I have several pepper plants that are ok size but my chillis are only 1 inch tall smallest and 4 inches tall , planted in March took around 2 weeks to just over a month to germinate in the warm airing cupboard only potted on once.

They are called jacobs coat chilli but cannot find any info on the net on this variety, supposed to be varying colours of the rainbow am beginning to think will have to over winter and wait for next year to get a single chilli pepper . If i had known they were this slow would of planted all ten seed not just 5.

Potatoes falling over

My potatoes are in bags and some have begun to tumble over at just above soil level, when the first lot fell over i thought something had hit them like a kids ball had been kicked in the bag but several bags of spuds have now begun to just flop over just above soil level.

Is this normal the bags feel mildly damp but not soaking so due for a water tonight.First lot fell over in the week and had not long since been well and truly watered.

Strange branches on tomato plant

I have this problem with my black Russian toms a shoot with flowers then leaves at the end not sure if i should leave the leaves or not . Its not a side shoot but not really a flowering fruiting shoot its just odd but then so are the flowers they look more like minature dalia flowers than tom flowers.

I am falling in love with my Black Russian its so unusual and the most amazing Tomato it lives in my bedroom , and gets more attention than my husband.

I think i will go home today and trim my Tomatoes leaves.

Rasied bed walkway problem

Posted: 01/07/2013 at 17:51

Built my raised beds this year on a budget. The area used to be membrane and bark chippings for the kids (now grown up) play equipment.

I used the membrane inbetween the beds and bark chippings.

Would of originally loved lawn as looks nice or slabs as look so clean cut but now I love the bark chips .

Bark chips are soft to kneel on , I live on my knees in the veg patch lately.

When its wet the bark chips are not slimy or muddy and dry quickly.

Most weeds dont seem to want to grow in the bark chips and what does i crawl all over and squash.

And last but not least if i spill a tiny bit of compost it dosent need to be cleaned up although big spills still get cleaned away.

What to feed veg ?

Thanks for all the tips not sure about the miricle grow never have been to be honest. But will deffinatly top up with blood fish and bone.

Looks like i got it right to start with as all raised bed area were dug out completly 6- 8 inches filled with well rotted farm yard 4-6 inches and then re filled with sieved soil then stirred in a quantity of goat manure 1/2 an inch and then with purchased soil 6 inches to half fill the beds. Planning on topping up next year with more of the rotted stuff or some goat and more purchased soil.

Might just do a sprinle of blood fish and bone later in the summer and feed the pots and the squash with tom food.

What to feed veg ?

Magnesium , potassium i read these words all the time this plant needs magnesium that needs potassium but no one ever says this food is good for x veg as it has magnesium or potassium. I think this is where my confusion started and my brain went blank whilst my eyes glazed over.
