Winter Veg Growing

Posted: 10/07/2014 at 17:08

I grew salald and spinach in the raised bed next to the house last winter. There are a few good winter salads like tatsoi. I did however have issues with baby slugs due to the mild winter and my salad being about the only soft leaves in the garden.

I also did spring onions over winter which came up quickly in the spring for picking. Broad beans are great planted in September /October and picked in April. Not really winter but over winter.

If you have a greenhouse why not try new potatoes for Christmas day,its a bit hit and miss but good fun if it works.

I have lots of current and cherry tom plants  in front garden tons of flowers and green tomatoes not one red one yet. Weather has been unkind here very windy and my cordon tomatoes in front and rear garden are very stocky really thick stems and only a few flowers. I am in herts on the border of Beds and Middlesex and its not been very sunny just cloudy and windy.

I am sure this time last year my first beef tom was looking like ripening. All mine are out doors.

whats the difference between loganberry and tayberry.

What ever they are, they are near the gate and the kids (mainly) and I (sometimes) just stop and pick on the way in and out of the garden. Not many if any will ever make it to bowls, planted them there for lads to nibble and they do!

I love having fruit and tomatoes by all the doors and gates to be picked at by the boys, veggie patch is off limits thats food for the kitchen.

This is getting complicated

I am picking of one plant now and the other is only lookiing like it may flower so by pansy face I am picking the tayberry.

The berries are very large and only sweet when black/red in colour so by garden maiden I am picking Loganberrys .

Lesson do not stick the pot with the paper label next to the plant to mark what it is . Right a proper label.

Still very confused ?

What have you learnt this year in the garden?

Posted: 10/07/2014 at 15:38

Wow how many of us are turning into homicidal maniacs this year, slugs are really testing so many peoples will to not use pellets.

Zig zag if sowing direct it might not be your sowing but the slime monsters thats caused what seems like a lack of germination.
