Thanks figetbones, yes the brown bits do brush off and there is a bit of green underneath.I have 2 of these and I trimmed them about 6 weeks ago but the other one isnt affected ( see photo ) so I thought this one might have some kind of decease.

I have been taking cuttings for many years and have always used just multi purpose compost, They can be taken at any time of the year, when its cold I use a heated propagator.

At my OH request I am trying to create a border of blue and white flowers,I have planted Alyssum with Lobelia . The problem is the Alyssum is already flowering before the Lobelia, should I remove the flowers on the Alussum to get them to flower at the same time

Thanks everyone especially Fairygirl,maybe I will put it in a pot and give it new  compost. So depressing when you can see the buds about to burst but never do,but I wont give up.
