Delta Sarah is my favourite hardy, always buy mine from Brookside Nursery, good quality and quite cheap.

Another Fuchsia question

Make sure you strip then of all the leaves and flowers, cut them back by about a third and repot them in new compost. The rust wont affect next years growth, if you can maintain them at a minimum of 5 degrees they will continue to put on new growth throughout the winter.

Is the smelly water detrimental to the plants or is the smell just annoying?

Fuchsia Rust

Posted: 13/10/2014 at 09:44

I grow at least 50 Fuchsias a year for baskets and this has been the worst year for rust that I can remember. Rust will not affect overwintering your plants. What I do every October is strip every plant of all its leaves and flowers and cut them back by about a third, I then remove them from the baskets and repot them individually.Provided they are kept above 5 degrees they will start to sprout new growth over the winter. Hope this helps.

The other side of Monty Don.

Monty is fine, the programme is OK, but seeing the ruddy dog all the time drives me bonkers. I like dogs, and Nigel's OK, but it's a gardening programme - please - not an indulgent dog cameo-corner. Enough. Beechgrove is a gigantic garden, with a swimming pool sized 'pond' and that's fair enough despite it has little in common with the hanky patches attached to modern dolls' houses And I've also had  enough with the dead box hedge. I just wait for the 'to do' list and enjoy the pretty pictures. It's aspirational with a genial host. I quite liked his jewellery in the 80's, shame it went bust.

Have to agree Jack, all he seems to do is dig stuff up and then plant more stuff,I think we all know how to do that. And the times he mentions that bloody box hedge is doing my head in.I now record it so I can miss out the boring bits which leaves about 10 minutes worth watching.

I have an old conifer tree trunk and was wondering if I drilled holes in it would it be suitable for a bee hotel.

Worst year for rust

Every year I grow lots of Fuchsias for baskets but this year nearly every plant has been affected by rust, I have never known it so bad. Anyone else had this problem?

Free fuchsias what to do now

I would plant them out now so they have a chance to get a good root system before the winter, make sure you cover the roots with a lot of mulch before the cold weather arrives to stop them freezing. they will come again in spring.
