Fork Handles

Hi Lottiebeans and Miss L.Toe.

Thanks for the welcome. Im not doing much for new year. However...tomorrow I have managed to talk my other half to take me to a garden centre here and I have recently found a hazel grove so will collect some stems (and plant others) and make some wigwams up I think.

Composting and wormery

Posted: 30/12/2012 at 23:54

HELP. I have made myself a compost heap (Just the one) out of an couple of old pallets which has a tarp over it which is weighted down so it doesn't blow away. I have the bottom full of leaves and the next layer is shredded paper. What else can I put in it and is there a rule of thumb of how much of what goes in? I used a lot of compost for my tubs and stuff but really want a go at making my own. Also, is it worth getting a wormery set up and how do I persuade the worms to come and live in wormtopia???

Sunshine here!!! O frabjous day Calloo Callay!!!--sorry-it's been so lng it's made me a little giddy!!!

Discovered my newly emerging hellebore shoots are covered with aphids, but bulbs are well up in my pots. Just generally tidying up. Feels SOOOOO good to be outside!

Urgh, Here in Scotland, we have had rain for the past three weeks and before that was snow. Cant remember what the orange thing in the sky looks like I am praying for a nice hot summer and a great spring. On the up side...I have loads and loads of bulbs up in pots (Haven't decided where they are goin in the new garden yet) and on the down side...my beautiful terracotta trough has bitten the dust and has shattered

Talkback: Healing herbs

Posted: 30/12/2012 at 23:20

It wont let me quote for some reason. Hmmm. Making tea from herbs...all you are doing is infusing boiling water. Put an handful of herbs in your tea pot and pour boiling water over them. The longer you leave them the stronger the tea. Be careful though as some are diuretic mind as well as laxative etc and some just don't taste good. I make wine out of mine :P

I know what you mean mysterywoman. Im not buying plants just now, my latest craze is stone gargoyles, fairies and dragons for the garden. Think i would be cheaper with plants lol

My grandad was a keen veg grower and crazy about runner beans so after harvest I can remember pickling jars full of runner bean chutney everywhere even on the garage shelves and can remember following along behind him on the narrow pathways in between bean plants. Also can remember helping my dad with tomatoes in the greenhouse and cultivating a patch next to the greenhouse with my brother with easy stuff like sunflowers and nasturtiums and ageratums. You cant beat the taste of fresh peas even if you have to spend ages shelling them outside your grandmas kitchen before Sunday lunch. Have always cultivated every strip I ve had of flowerbed in every house and flat be it it rented or owned

I remember those kind of days too. Was never allowed in the veg patch on my own. Mum always said we were worse than the slugs and caterpillers, nibbling everything
