Your experiences with Astrantia

Posted: 11/12/2012 at 01:06

I have fallen in love with Astrantia and would love to grow it for my garden. I have been told that they are very difficult to grow from seed. Is this true? Am I likely to have success with sowing or should I just buy the plants? Suggestions would be great and very much appreciated. Thanks.

can I plant now?

Privet is nice, gives a loverly scent which is heavy in the air, good for bees and butterflies and quick growing too. It would'nt get to high if you look after it either Its not jaggy but you could mix a mayberry through it too which is jaggy

If it got too big you could always copice it and use the canes for weaving new supports in the garden. I have a contorted hazel which is about 10 years old now and produced nuts for the first time this year. The three it produced...I managed to save one as the tree rats got them.

Seed swap

Hey, I have a garden that has been abandoned for 25-30 years and have been gathering some plants etc to grow to bring it back to life. Due to the price of plants...I decided that it was maybe a better idea to grow everything from seed. I have quite a collection now but have found that I have extra seeds that i cant use. I love the idea of everything in my garden being raised by myself and have found it very satisfying. Its snowing out side and I have been scanning through the Thompson & Morgan seed catologue to see what goodies I can find. Would anyone be interested in doing a seed swap through the forum??? Put up what you have and see if someone else has seeds you would like to swap with them? Maybe its a daft idea and I understand that it would be based on trust on both parties but, you would pay your own post (Lets face it, would only be a stamp)...and Im sure that we are all adult enough not to rip each other off as we are all friends in the garden loL

If its a daft idea then just say but I think it might work?

How can I get rid of wire worm?

Posted: 15/11/2012 at 10:52

Thanks guys. I cant have chickens, although I would love them, I cant get permission as on the edge of a town. I have found that there is a type of mustard that can be grown in the ground, after a couple of months, they are chopped down and shredded and then dug in the ground again. As long as this is done within 8 minutes...the wee devils are actually gasses out the ground. I have planted some so will let you know how I get on. Never though for a second I would need to resort to chemical warfair lol. Thanks again everyone for you help

This is my first year of collecting seeds and I am now gettin quite excited about my new venture. I have had a greenhouse donated to me and would like to know if there are any perennial seeds I can plant now and bring on in the greenhouse for my garden next year?

How can I get rid of wire worm?

I moved into my house a year ago and the garden has not been touched for over 25 years. I have cleared the weeds and ground of rubbish and started digging it all over. I planted all the veg I usually do and lost everything. I have wire worm in the ground. I have been to all the well known garden centres, and some little ones, trawled the net and still can't find a solution to this problem. Can someone please help as I am now left with land I can't do anything with.
