New turf down, do I need to water when its raining?

Posted: 24/05/2013 at 13:58

Stupid question!

We laid new turf today and it has been drizzling all morning and forecast heavy rain later, do I still need to water it?

Has anyone used either of these lawn edges? Are they worth the money?

Thanks very much for replying

This is probably a really stupid question! but, do I look at how much a plant should spread and then leave that amount of space around it when I plant it? Am I expected it too look very gappy until stuff establishes or do I fill in the spaces and then move stuff as they grow?

Forgot to add, what is the best soil/compost to fill them with? They currently are about half full with the soil that was there but we need to top them up with something else, do we go for topsoil, compost, rotted manure?

We have just created 4 raised borders in our garden (raised due to the slope we live on). I now have the challange of creating a scheme for them all and I have no idea where to start. They are south east facing, each one is 2.4m wide and 1 metre deep, edged with sleepers and we are on a chalky soil. I want to plant a mix of thyme and lavander and maybe something else along the lawn in from of them to soften the harsh edges and I want the borders to look like one long display, not 4 boxes but I really have no idea how to plan them? Any tips? Thanks

Thanks BrummieBen thats really helpful. Would a one tonne bag on sharp sand spread over the area (the top half is 10m long by 3.5m wide and the bottom track about 8 by 1m) be enough? We do have loads of stones everywhere so will try and remove the biggests ones.

We haven't been able to do it before now and i don't want a summer of no grass, what is going to recover has done and the rest is full of weeds or just bare. The chickens are in a run, damage has been caused by us walking up and down the garden to see to them over the grass when it was very wet! We have stepping stones to put down once the turf is down  and we can keep the dog off it until its established. I know its no an ideal time but needs must!

Laying new Turf

We are going to lay new turf soon as a wet winter, a dog and no stepping stones to get to the chickens have left us with a complete mess of a garden!

Do we need to take off what is left of the existing lawn? My husband think we can just dig it all over and turf on top? I am more inclined to think that we need to remove the old stuff first?
