Over Wintering Dahlias

Posted: 21/11/2014 at 15:02

Rich B if you want your Dahlia tubers to be clear of earth use your garden hose to wash them clean then leave them outside for a couple of days to dry. When I store mine I put them in  plastic bags without anything else when they are completely dry.I check them on the first of every month to be sure they are not rotting or drying out.

I grew the yellow trumpet vine about 30 years ago and was sorry I did.The roots started to lift my sidewalk and the top growth was covering my other plants, the weight started my fence to fall over. That's when I decided to get ride of it,it took 7 years to finally kill it off.

Charlie the minute I dig them and cut the stem off they go dormant because they are not receiving any more nourishment.

Posted: 06/11/2014 at 21:31

We are told to let the frost hit them before you dig them but I don't know why so I ignore that advice and dig mine in September when its still warm outside.I have always dug my bulbs/tubers ect early and have never had problems.

Can some one please tell me what the frost is supposed to do for them.
