Hi Frances, the leaves do die back just as alliums start to bud. Mine have been in flower for three weeks now and have no leaves whatsoever. It's my first year doing them, but I have no reason to doubt they will flower next year

Will the larkspur flower this year? How will you look after the seedlings from now on? I've got a packet of seed, but not really up for any more pots of stuff....

Is there such a thing as dark purple stem snap dragons?

Posted: 20/06/2013 at 10:29

I think it must be fairly common - I've got loads of snapdgragons grown from a generic pack of seeds 'Snapdragons - perfect for children' and quite a few have purple stems and purple edged leaves. Some even have leaves with bright pink edges!

What a coincidence! I have just acquired two Charter's Doubles in Apricot. I was thinking of putting them against the NW facing front wall of my house, which gets very little direct sunlght, bu tis damp, along with a couple of lupins. So the exact opposite if you!

I look forward to seeing what the verdict is!

Bee spotting guide

Could anyone suggest a good bee spotting/identification guide? We have a wall chart with c. 50 types of bee that came with my boyfriend's bee house, but we have already seen bees that are not on there! We'd like a book or  a better chart if possible.

Failing that, an app (android) or website would be great, if anyone knows of a good one.

I've got a small one of these. I think the new leaves start off red, go pink and then yellow, before eventually turning green. I don't think it will go back red no matter what you feed it until it grows some more leaves! Mine seems to do this quite a lot though, so hopefully you will have some red leaves soon

Saint or sinner?.....don't like annuals

Posted: 16/05/2013 at 09:10

My garden would be a sorry sight without annuals - it's our first year in a grass rectangle. We haven't decided on many permanent plants, so for this year at least it's a glorious jumble of flowers and the odd veg. I may leave it that way - I like sowing seeds

seedling help?

Nah, I bet there's loads of veg you can sow now. We did spring onions, parsley, chives and coriander and they're only just coming through so I'm sure yours would catch up.

Yes I think that's tight about carrots, you can sow every couple of weeks right through July - that's what it says on my seed packet anyway. They are seeds for children to sow with very clear instructions, which I'm sure lazygardener would approve of for novices like us...

Oh. Mine are basking in sunshine at the moment I thought that was why they were flowering so well and for so long!
