Sowing Ornamental Grasses

Posted: 17/04/2013 at 11:51

Can I ask (sorry to hijack Andy), are these grasses ok in shade?

The last metre or so of my otherwise very bright south facing garden has yet to get any direct sun this year. I'm risking it with some wildflower mix, but something with a bit of height would be good and I like the sound of 'billowing'.

Andy, wildflowers and ornamental grass sounds like a lovely combination - hence copying!

worth buying primroses now?

When do you divide primroses then? I love my primroses and some of them have gotten absolutely huge since I planted them in Feb

Yes I've heard you can do the same thing with a 50:50 mix of baking soda and icing sugar. I assume ant powder is the same sort of thing though - they eat it and take it back the nest and feed it to their compatriots and die. I hope it's not meant to work instantly, cos there's a lot of white ants running around among my sweet peas and not dying as of yet...

I shall try a kettle of boiling water next... Possibly infused with mint...

I've whipped out the ant powder and squirted (puffed??) liberally all over what I exposed and down into the as many holes as I could see.

MMP no way could I have kept on digging, there were so many ants and they actually SMELLED . Not strong, but a definite odour. Yeah, my ants are definitely gonna have to go - they're 2m from the house, if not closer depending how much nest there is under ground.

I too found an absolutely enormous (but hopefully no as big as yours) nest yesterday, so I'm watching this with interest.

Mine is around a fence post and running behind three upright paving slabs, which retain next doors patio, which is c. 0.5 m higher than ours. My ants sem to be extending - they had uprooted one of my young sweet pea plants last night! God knows how far under the garden they go - I stopped digging once I saw the baby ants

How long after lawn feed and weed killer can I plant things?

Posted: 13/04/2013 at 21:08

It's Sainsbury's Lawn Feed Weed and Mosskiller (made by Westland). I have now emailed Westland to see what they say.

Yes it does say compost clippings for six months and do not use first three mowings for mulching. I'll wait a few weeks and plant away I think...

Thanks everyone for your help

Nutcutlet, how about 2, 4-D (0.562% w/w) and Mecropop-P (0.562% w/w)

That was on a different part of the packet. The bit I looked at before did say 'fertiliser' at the top...

Doesn't weedkiller tend to work on contact with the foliage (poss not from what Verdun has said)? Maybe I'm overworrying this a bit - I am planning to take the grass off after all.

Actually Gold1locks, it does say on the packet that you can sow grass seed after four weeks, but I'm not sure that makes it ok for other plants? It is only designed not to kill grass after all.

Verdun it would indeed mainly be annuals (my boyfriend avoided the area we are going to turn over for some strawberries and a few leeks and parsnips later on). I can trench the grass in - that's a really good idea in general as we don't have room for a compost heap.

Still not sure I want to risk my precious home-grown plants all shrivelling up and dying within days of being planted though. You would think there'd be some kind of warning on the packet!

Nutcutlet, on the packet it says:

Phosphorus pentoxide total 2%, phosphorus pentoxide (soluble in water) 0.2%, potassium oxide 4%, nitrogen 12%

Also contains ferrous sulphate for moss

Verdun, no, I don't think we could store that much soil - I'll be taking a couple of inches off with the grass. I'm gutted - we've got so much to plant!

A week ago we sprinkled granular lawn feed and weed killer all over the lawn (most of the garden), inculding areas down the edges that I had planned to tuen into flower beds.

Do I need to wait before doing this now? I've got loads of stuff to plant and lots of seeds to sow
