New house, new garden, total newbie

Posted: 03/08/2013 at 18:49

Hi congratulations on the new house. I wouldn't be to much of a rush to make changes, I would just keep the lawns tidy, remove any weeds and watch. Make notes of the plants you like, photos are great way of remembering areas. Then about this time next year you will have a much better idea of how your garden will unfold. Regarding knowledge we are always learning, never be afraid to ask questions however stupid they may sound, there will always be someone who will know the answer. There are loads of books you could read a good one for general gardening which I have used is the rhs encyclopaedia of gardening it covers most things. I would nip to the book store grab a drink and have a good look at them all, find one that's right for you. To be honest the web is where I turn to now.

hope it helps and enjoy the garden.

By the sounds of it glad i decided not to go this year. I've been going every year for ages. I didn't think last year was as good as previous years, so I made my mind up to go to Tatton park instead. I am disappointed that so far there seems to be no coverage.

Can only echo advice above, just took a plot on myself had it about a month now. I'm also building raised beds, it does take a bit if time and money to fill them. I too was lucky enough to source free wood. The rest of the ground has been dug in order of what crops need to go in first. I find that I do some digging, then move onto a bit of planting, it makes the digging less tedious. The main thing is to enjoy the space.

Thanks what a great idea, would you just drill through the aluminium frame to attach the hinges. This is a new area to me so thanks for the help.

Hi here in doncaster it's a big gamble on what to do. Still very cold wet and more frosts and snow to come, so the weather reports say. I might put some potatoes in next weekend as a test but being prepared to loose them.

Hi I just signed for my first allotment plot today ( very excited), I have inherited 2 sheds and a part glazed greenhouse. The problem is the greenhouse does not have a door. I was wondering if anyone has any ideas on where I could buy a door frame from so I can fit it into the sliding frame. Also how hard would it be to fit into the frame? My DIY skills are nov that bad, but never had to do this. Thanks very much.

Totally agree with the above, the awful rain we have had has probably put everything back at least a month. Mine have just started flowering, I started them indoors. There is still time if the weather allows fingers crossed.

T & M OFFER FOR MAY

Slugs and snails tell me about it what a nightmare. T&M changed their packaging so it goes through the letterbox, instead of having to collect at the post office when you have been out and missed the postman.

Yes they were the same size Hollie, but looked really healthy. I think that with the new postal system they have most plugs will be this size, but there wasn't a bad leaf, root or any rot on them. I'll try to get a photo on in next couple of days.
