30 Foot Acer Tree

I hate grey squirrels knowing they've driven out our reds & yes they're around here though I've not seen them strip that branch I could have been at work then/when they did it  I'll google this white stuff!!

There has always been lichen on the tree but it's silvery grey & textured.  This is as if someone has taken a 2 inch paintbrush & painted about 8 inches of a branch on the inside where the outer bark seems to have come away as we see in some small & large acers.  I tried chipping it off with my nail will little success.

After combination of rain & a snail snapped off the growing top of my Gardeners Delight foot high tomato plant, I'm hoping to grow another tomato from the broken tops.  I'm also wondering if the side shoots (that we're normally supposed to pick off) now sprouting from the joints of the 2 remaining lower branches on the damaged plant will be able to bear flowers & fruit - does anyone know?

I've just noticed several inches of whiteness on a lower branch which still has leaves further along.  I've never noticed this before & wonder if it could be a fungus & if so, how can I be sure & how can I treat it?  This was once a pink/green/white leaf variegated tree but now has all green leaves having exhausted the original acid soil we planted for it; there are sycomores & birches in the area where we live but the soil is quite heavy with clay deeper down.  The tree is about 15 years old.

Although my 2 year old Timperley Early rhubarb now has 3 crowns I am losing lower stems which become soft, floppy with yellowing leaves.  Upper, older leaves are green & healthy but there are only about 4 of these so I don't want to pull them in case the plant loses nourishment to grow.  I remove slugs & snails frequently & there is a frog about so I don't want to put down pellets.  It's more the over-all health or lack of it that worries me.  The other week I bought some road-side/farm 'mature compost' & put on a few inches having watered underneath first.  I think I also had applied some bonemeal etc. a few months ago & there's been plenty of rain.  I'm now worried that the plant may be worse for the compost & have moved some of it away from the crowns.  Any ideas as to what I should be doing?
