Thalictrum needs a boost

Posted: 15/07/2014 at 20:12

Courtesy of a Telegraph article:

An east-west bed with a hedge or fence to the north or south would allow appreciation of both flowers and fruit. Later still, the foliage changes to amber-yellow, an exciting contrast against the dark stalks.

I have a delaviyii and it is yellowing at the bottom.  I am sure I read somewhere that this is normal.

Massive grass snake

I saw a grass snake today, it was had a line of inquisitive sparrows hopping behind it!  It slithered in to the bushes with them hopping behind.  I don't know if they were seeing it off or were just being nosey.

A few days ago I saw a number of swallows sat on a fence line, they took it in turns to fly at a jackdaw that was watching them from a nearby.

Right then, I think plan B is to take up Dove's suggestion of contacting the RHS.  I notice that at Hampton Court next week there will be an RHS stand with gardening advice for their members from the science team.

Do we know anyone that will be attending, that is a member, that could take up our cause?!

Yay!  I needed some moral support to get on and do it, I have been wobbling about trimming them for a few weeks now.  On my way now with a glass of wine and some secateurs

A follow up on the yew hedges.  I planted them last year and I am now itching to cut the tops off to make them the same size as the existing hedge.  Can I do it now or will it slow the side growth I need for it to fill out?

I have the same problem, I grew these from seed I bought in the UK.  Really interested to know what it is as I too don't think it is mildew.

Shrub identification please

I confess to trying to murder whatever this is last winter, last year the poor growth it gave off was covered in mildew so I chopped it right back.  I then thought the base of it was dead so actually hacked at it with a hand axe in February but couldn't get the dratted thing out.

It rewarded me for doing this by actually looking quite healthy.  Before I decide to go all Texas Chainsaw Massacre on it again, can anyone identify it?  It may get a reprieve if it will be pretty.....
