Yay!  I needed some moral support to get on and do it, I have been wobbling about trimming them for a few weeks now.  On my way now with a glass of wine and some secateurs

Moving a Yew

A follow up on the yew hedges.  I planted them last year and I am now itching to cut the tops off to make them the same size as the existing hedge.  Can I do it now or will it slow the side growth I need for it to fill out?

Dusty white deposit on penstemon flowers

I have the same problem, I grew these from seed I bought in the UK.  Really interested to know what it is as I too don't think it is mildew.

Shrub identification please

I confess to trying to murder whatever this is last winter, last year the poor growth it gave off was covered in mildew so I chopped it right back.  I then thought the base of it was dead so actually hacked at it with a hand axe in February but couldn't get the dratted thing out.

It rewarded me for doing this by actually looking quite healthy.  Before I decide to go all Texas Chainsaw Massacre on it again, can anyone identify it?  It may get a reprieve if it will be pretty.....

Cows in garden

Electric fencing would keep them away from the wall it could be put just below the wall on the cow's side so you don't have to see it.

What have you learnt this year in the garden?

As a beginner gardener my lesson has been "just chuck the seeds in the bed and be done with the faffing". This winter I lovingly attempted to nurture verbena bonaris seeds.  I managed to plant out 8 of the seedlings which keep being nibbled.  They haven't really taken off.

I had some seeds left over so about a month ago I thought what the hey, I'll just scatter then in the bed next to the seedlings.  These produced many more plantlets that look stronger than mine and are catching up!

Lost garden tools

Fairygirl you have made my day, I am always trekking back and forth to the shed for forgotten tools..... I had a spare carrier like yours which I loaded up and toted around the garden today.  Thank you for saving me the many trudged miles, swearing under my breathe, that will no longer be trod

Globe thistle (echinops bannaticus) sowing seeds now?

Posted: 14/06/2014 at 18:38

I have bought some seed today, it says on the packet to sow in May but we are a couple of weeks behind the UK here.  I guess the worst that will happen is that the seeds won't germinate.

Do seeds care that much about when they are sown?  Should I just be patient and sow them a bit later?
