Back after cutting the hedge back. You're right Sue, things do manage to grow near. There's day lilies, hardy geraniums, sweet rocket and lots of spring bulbs.

Acorns don't last long here, Matty. Lots of squirrels and this year lots of jays. I think the jays come from the continent especially for the acorns.

The village is Goonhavern, James. Look forward to meeting you if you come down.

Powdery mildew.

I used about a tenth of milk to water but the clematis did succomb in the end. Perhaps I didn't start the treatment early enough. I think cream would be okay. I think it's the lactic acid in milk  that affects the mildew.

I've planted some viola this year but haven't for a few years as in the past they've been affected by some sort of virus that causes black spots on the leaves and they eventually died

Hi James,

I live near Perranporth so you and your wife are very welcome to come for a coffee if you are down here next year.

Good morning all.

Lovely and sunny today although the weathermen say the winds are coming back at the weekend.  We didn't have much damage in the 1987 storm but in 1990 we were without power for six days as so many power lines were down. We were last in line as there are only two properties down our lane and the team who mended our lines had been sent over from Ireland. Western Power seem to be a bit more organised now and we frequently see helicopters inspecting the power lines and then get a knock on the door asking if they can go on our land to cut trees back.

Talking of ctting trees back, my mission for today is to finish cutting the hedge back. It is mostly the dreaded leylandii (planted not by us but about 30 years old) It's not too bad if kept small. There is honeysuckle and clematis montana going through it so looks a bit wild but quite pretty.

Good to see Verdun back. I'll have to fight for a slice of cake now.

Any damage?

Hope not too much damage for you all.

All fine in Cornwall although they are already forcasting another storm this weekend.

So sad about the teenager going missing in the sea at Newhaven.

Good morning all,

I've got my mask on this morning in case I catch one of your bugs.  Hope everyone feels better soon.

The weathermen are scaring us about the stroms over the weekend. This time last year we had floods everywhere.

Verdun, did you hear about the waxy stuff that's been washed up on our beaches? It has already killed a dog and made others very ill according to reports. Just be careful if you take your pooch onto the beach.

Gardening quiz

Stuck on that one Welshonion.

I sometimes compiled quizzes for the local pub. (Not gardening questions) the first page was a picture quiz. I cut pictures out of magazines etc. and stuck them on a sheet of paper then photo copied as many sheets as needed for the quiz. Perhaps you could do the same with with pictures of plants Woody.

I've seen documentaries about those crabs, Fidget. I think they were land crabs but the eggs still had to be laid in the sea but when they hatched made their way back to the land. Luckily our Cornish crabs stay in the sea.

Too wet for the lawn mower so I got some help in. Keeping an eye on them, though, in case they pig out on the apples.

Does your wand not work on concrete, Fairy?

The worst pest in my garden,Verdun, is rabbits. Are there any nematodes against them?   I have never had lily beetle but we are fairly isolated here. I don't know how far they can fly but they seem widespread now so I suppose it's only a matter of time.

Thanks Verdun. You were right about the summer forcast so hope you are right about the winter, but maybe could we have a few frosts to kill off the bugs.
