It's the ones who come second I feel sorry for. No one remembers their names. They must be really dedicated to put everything aside, even their families for their sport. Didn't someone once say ( I can't remember who) 'if you ever see me in a boat again shoot me' then went on to compete again.

The Curiousity Mars thing is an achievement, Jean. I read somewhere we might have originated from Mars and came to Earth as bacteria carried on asteroids.

Talking of things astrological the Perseid meteor shower is due this weekend. Hope the sky is clear.

Thanks Geoff. I understand they need sponsorship. It's amazing how far athletes have come when they can devote all their time to training and don't have to worry about earning a living.

Didn't realise only so many footballers on a team to be over 23. Seriously worried now about our ambitions to field a team for next games.

Kate, I'm not up on the Olympic rules but I always thought they had to be amateurs. So don't understand how the footballers and tennis players compete.

If we can't get a football team ready for the next lympics perhaps Geoff could represent us in golf if that becomes a lympic sport.

Morrisons have had clematis and passion flowers for £1.79 for quite a while. there are lots of varieties of clematis. Not big enough to plant out yet but one I  bought earlier on this year has already flowered and has more buds on.

the sprinter with the sleeves had lovely long hair but with hundreds of a second counting would it make a difference if they shaved their heads especially in wet weather when the hair would be heavy when wet.

He'll be glad of the peace and quiet Miss B if he's got twins. You might get snowed in together in the winter and that little bothy will be nice and cosy.

Why Amsterdam, Geoff? Was your mam-in-law Dutch?

We scattered my mam-in-law's ashes in the sea near us. We went down some steps at high tide with the sea lapping at the bottom of the steps and scattered the ashes and threw som flowers on the waves. To our horror two surfers came behind us and plunged straight into the sea not realising what they were swimming through. It did lighten the mood afterwards though.

There has been lots of records smashed in these games. There was a lot of talk about the young Chinese swimmer and even suggestions that she had had gene therapy but I didn't hear any murmers when the American swimmers broke records and they have'nt been exactly innocent in the past.

I must live within 15 miles of Doctor 63 yet no rain here or yesterday in spite of a yellow warning. No wonder the weathermen can't always get it right.

Geoff, be careful, you might be sniffing a banned substance.
