March in your Garden

Posted: 29/03/2013 at 17:42

I went into my local B+M store today and low and behold in the garden section outside I found some Helleborus Niger so as they were reduced from £2.99 to £2.25 (not a lot I know)  I got them,  it says on the plant section of GW to put them in a shady spot the question is this,  is it shady all the time, or just through the day,  I have a North Facing and an East facing border so which would be the best for them,  I've never grown these before.

ROSES

Surely pruning roses now is a big mistake,  at least with the frost about they are best left till it get's a lot warmer leastwise when there's no frost about, to me thinking it through logically if you prune now and there's a good hard frost it will kill the new growth,  at least if they are left for a while when the frost's nip it will only be on already dead wood,  I gave mine the prune in October to prevent the winter rock and haven't touched them yet,  the ends are all dead thanks to the frost's but plenty of new growth below which I don't want killed by the frost so come end of April or even earlier I shall prune them

What's the weather like in your area?

I've had wall to wall sunshine and a tropical 5.5c but still that bitter cold Easterly,  the weather men are telling me that this cold weather could last till the end of April,  that will definitely put paid to the plantlet's in the GH's

Just a slight covering this morning of snow when I got up but had gone by mid morning, been trying all day to drop more but thankfully not very successful,  it is snowing now and due to the wind it's almost horizontal

I still haven't had any snow or rain,  but Like Jo the wind is baltic,  just about froze my ears of while I was out with the dog,  in fact it's that cold the dog had 2 coats on well she's nearly 16 so feels the cold more than me,  the sun did manage to get out briefly but I think it was too cold for that as well so beat a hasty retreat behind the clouds oy=ut of the way

Mares Tail - how to win

Posted: 24/03/2013 at 11:51

You must remember that Horse tails/Mares tail were around when the Dinosaurs where on the planet,  600 million years ago and it used to grow to around 6 feet tall,  so if it survived the extinction of them and all the various things that has happened to this planet in the meanwhile you must admire it's tenacity even though we don't like it,  so I doubt that much will kill it on a permanent basis.

SNOW!

I'm very very fortunate as I've had neither snow or rain since that weather front moved in,  all I've had is a biting cold easterly wind.

Strawberries

Posted: 22/03/2013 at 11:52

I've put my strawberry plants in hanging basket's this year just to see how they fare,  the birds got mine last year but I was growing them in strawberry bags

the bright orange one but I think because of all the rain last year the birds went for easy option's and ate my strawb's,  they did very well in the bags and easy to set off new plants so depending on how they go in the baskets I might just go back to the bags.

Morning all,  bitter cold here for me in Middlesbrough but at least it's dry just having to cope with a biting wind  just have to be thankful that we have power unlike those in  parts of Norther Ireland that are without it,  hope it comes back on for them ASAP.
