Putting softdrinks on the garden

Posted: 22/06/2013 at 07:31

My neighbours, who are in their 90's now, used to put the dregs of their homemade wine on their hydrangea's. They get the biggest and most beautiful blooms every year! I tried feeding mine last year with some wine dregs and must say I think it worked. I'd had very little blooms since putting them in, after feeding them the wine dregs I had big beautiful blooms. On the other hand, it may well have been something to do with the copious amounts of rain we had last year . I haven't fed them with it this year but kept them well watered so I'm watching this space...

Will anything grow in full shade?

If your looking for shrubs I grow Mahonia successfully along with Japanese anemone, Comphrey and Hydrangea's in my shaded area. I have to keep watering well as its beneath a big Mountain Ash Whitebeam tree. I get a little sunshine early morning but most of the day its in shade.

Rodgydodge, hiya.

Dont know what's on it tonight but Beachgrove is on at 7.30.  Last week It was about plants and, for me, was as good as Gardeners World.

Hi Verdun, I was looking for something the other night on catchup and noticed Beachgrove, is it on every night? for the last 30 yrs I've enjoyed my Friday evenings with a bottle of wine, chocolate and gardeners world. If Beachgrove is on every evening I'll really enjoy my gardening night in tonight! on catchup...

Cats in my flowerbeds

Posted: 20/06/2013 at 17:59

I have a caterpult for the same reason, I have a cat but since the neighbours aquired two females we now get every puss and its relative paying a visit next door via my garden, and yes they stop and spray as well as poop! I kept all my birch twigs when I pruned the tree and as well as making good plant supports they keep the cats from doing their business on my newly seeded borders.

You could try being creative with your paving slabs by breaking them up and creating verticle walls and planting into it! I took these pictures from Harlow Carr the other month which I thought was a great idea for gardening verticle.

My son has a small back yard and at the time I was thinking of him.

I keep coming back to this and editing   my son and his girlfriend use shoe holders to plant verticle too.

Back again lol, wish gardeners world would do more on front gardens and driveways! I'm struggling as what to do with mine.

If you spot any in your garden here's two useful sites to help recognise and record what variety you may have discovered. great to do with children especially seeing it's getting close to the big summer break.
