Putting paper in the compost

Posted: 08/08/2014 at 12:55

I put folded News Paper in the bottom of my runner bean trench, it is still damp after the driest of summers, then chop it up during the winter dig. Shredded paper goes on my compost and as already said don't shred the envelope windows.

Power and endurance of a petrol strimmer always outstrips a battery one, and if you have that extra bit of grass to cut there is no worries of running out of power.

Talkback: Dealing with bindweed

Posted: 08/08/2014 at 11:35
I took on a new allotment this year which was full of Bindweed, couch grass and nettles,as the soil was easy to dig I managed to Double Dig and remove most of the roots. Only Bindweed is still coming up which suggests the roots go to undigable depths.I am now treating it with a chemical control which effectively kills the roots.Signs are very good at the moment.

Lillium

I grow all my lilies in large pots and keep them in the greenhouse during the winter. This year as it has been so cold they are just starting to show through. Keep them moist but not too wet at the moment. Definitely plant them now with a little bone meal and you should have a good show in summer.

You haven't mention Whitefly above which affects my greenhouse tomatoes and all allotment Brassica. Tried many solutions in the past but am now to try Nematodes. These apparently are very successful in controlling carrot root fly as well.

Excellent tip about planting Basil with tomatoes to deter white fly. Hope it works in the greenhouse.
