Perennial Phlox Quandary

Trying to grow perennial phlox from seed I bought a packet from Benary, and

went two ways:

1. In a pot with compost and only (temperature about 15 degrees Celsius).

2. One month on compost in the fridge.

As I took the latter from its cool air, the seeds went through the same as in the

first experience, that is, they rotted! Simply melted away...!

What can I do for the last third of my seeds? Please help anyone who made it.

shallow soil

First improve texture to enrich the  soil: add lots of manure or humus. Some sort

of fibre would increase its ability to retain moisture, which must be the hardest

thing to tackle. Some finely cut bark chips are excellent.

How shallow is it? If less than 4 inches, rather difficult.

Plants: lobularia, thyme, globe daisy (globularia cordifolia), purslane, Livingstone

daisy, Linanthus.

Also check for various alpine plantas, like Violas, Gentians and Sedums.

Anyone ever grown dwarf delphiniums and hollyhocks

I grew the delphiniums in pots, so they didn´t grow much (about one and a half foot,

without the blooms).

The hollyhocks started blooming when they were over 2 feet high.

Summer has arrived

Singy, I don´t know the cultivar, but it is a sweet william (D.barbatus).

Anyone ever grown dwarf delphiniums and hollyhocks

My climate is somewhat different, but I´ve grown Magic Fountains and Majorette.

The first one succumbed to untimely heat where I live (last year was terrible for

me), but they grew quickly and bloomed in 5 months.

Now Majorette had a hard time with imagine what- mallow rust, but took one whole

year to bloom (just like any other hollyhock). Maybe I was wrong in sowing the

latter in mid-spring; perhaps end of summer would be more suitable. Anyway, there

you are.

Unknown Convolvulacea

I have found out this is very similar to Ipomoea nil, a wild climber used in

morning glory hybrids; probably a reversion, really like nutcutlet said.

What dianthus?

I have found out this cultivar is a crossing (believe it or not) of D.barbatus with

D.chinensi (Dianthus barbatus x Dianthus chinensis). That´s why the flowers look

like those of Chinese Pink and the plant is short and broad-leaved like Sweet

William.

Winter flowering violas

Breathtaking violas, Valerie. If I could, I´d plant an acre of Violas of

all kinds. Has anybody ever seen (live) the rosulate Violas?

Summer has arrived

John Harding, the pink clematis looks very much like Dr Ruppel, google it.

Levelling a garden

If I got it right, I wouldn´t level the driveway below 1, since coming out of the garage

may be difficult in rainy/frosty weather; keep it even with the road, and  pave a little

slope for access to the house.

Now for the front of the garden: 4 and 3 means the hedges are on high soil level,

right? If you remove them and dig the soil, first you´ll need a containment wall, then

shrubs or trees to screen the garden and the house from view and noise.

Don´t forget drainage pipes along the containment wall (or your garden will be

drenched with road water) and anywhere else there is a slope.
