Herbs need a lot of sunlight and very airy soil. If yours is not sandy or alkaline,

add grits. Don´t worry about rendering the soil poor, herbs don´t mind; they just

loathe wet feet! Many herbs, once happy, will become invasive. And what´s worth,

they will try and kill more vulnerable neighbouring plants or herbs. I have a small

patch with lemon balm, pennyroyal and golden chamomile: when there were no

boundaries, the second killed the third, and then it was killed by the first! Now I

edged them with bricks in an irregular pattern (to make it less boring than myself;

can´t post pictures, sorry) and added sage, marjoram and coriander (these are not

troublesome, but coriander needs successive sowing).

Here´s a simple sketch (the empty spaces are taken by carrots and lettuce; the

red lines are bricks):

Raised bed over Leylandii stumps

Posted: 04/06/2013 at 15:23

It is a lovely sunny site, very promising. But remember the leylandii somewhat

acidified the soil, so it would be auspicious to measure its pH before tilling and

adding manure.

There are some species (and cultivars) of day flower (Commelina) with similar

shades of blue. They are very easy to grow.

Will Acidanthera Ever Bloom?

Posted: 04/06/2013 at 15:13

I grew a dozen bulbs of Acidanthera in pots last year, and they grew well and

healthy, but no flowers at all. The same happened to my gladioli. Is my garden

too dark or what?

I´m sorry I have no idea, but the leaves remind me of Aruncus.

weird roses

Posted: 24/05/2013 at 20:50

There were roses before grafting, so I always give a try with the cuttings I get from

pruning. The picture is of a rose which grew this way. It is identical with the mother,

but far, far weaker. That is the rub, grafting is not for aesthetic purposes, but for

the strength and sturdiness of the plant. Better put it in the ground, since roses are

not happy with pots. Wish I had room for mine...

Gaillardia death

It might be my less-than-reasonable garden, but the shoots my gaillardias produced

have not been the healthiest, rather short-lived instead.

Idea's and suggestios for my front garden please

What´s that in the middle of the lawn? A lamp? Think of a lamp post (before you

returf!) with handles (or what-do-you-call-them) to hang baskets. It would add

seasonal  colour without having to mess with the lawn scheme. No need to

place the post in the middle; a little to the side of the gate would add charm.

You could also plant a small bunch of low flowers to fit around or ahead of the

post.

Fairy Girl´s hint at gathering the pots is excellent: oppose them  to the shrub, in

a corner. If you can, add pots of different heights and widths, though of the same

colour.

Hedges are such a bore! Imagine airy bushy shrubs like Daphne, Escallonia,

Kerria that will do the job well, let the air and light in, and attract bees galore.

Whatever you do, do with love and everything will suit well.

It is such a pity only two plants survived, here is the first one to bloom:

I bought a packet of seeds of Mimulus hybridus from T & M, and from the paltry forty

seeds therein, only a dozen sprouted, and from this, only two grew up! Is that normal,

or am I a lazy monkey flower grower?
