Done it, until spring ... not v good pictures, but lovely compared to the concrete earlier in the year!  These may or may not work as a slide show (in which case you may get pictures of all sorts of god knows what) - I have a new photograph album package and I don't understand it at all.

Gladiolus callianthus - peacock orchid

They're so lovely, aren't they - I've said somewhere else that I didn't even notice that they had come up until those gorgeous flowers came out - it was a total surprise!

Serious stuff......no! Really

Tamarix, I have only met one other person before you who remembered the ping wings, and I am thrilled to find there is a clip on the internet, I shall sally forth and find it.

Jim, I suspect the black and white horse you're talking about was Muffin the Mule.

Everybody, I'm amazed that no-one has mentioned Tales of the Riverbank with Ratty, or a bit later on Animal Magic with Johnny Morris ....

Cold frames and greenhouses

Posted: 22/10/2013 at 00:06

Hi GG, welcome to the forum - we made our cold frame from drawers out of a woodwormy cupboard with a bit of double glazing from the tip - cost about £1 total!  Not actually a thing of beauty, but works well. We have a greenhouse which was unheated last year, and the seeds in the diy coldframe worked better - this year we know a (tiny) bit more than we did, so we are going to put seeds that need to chill into the frame and overwinter more tender things in the greenhouse which has a heater now.

Winter tree wash

Earlier this year, the forum identified and gave advice on a woolly aphid problem on our apple tree, for which I thank you very much.  I blithely accepted the advice that we should apply a winter wash to kill the nymphs, but now that winter is nearly here I realise that I don't know anything about doing so!  For a start, what is it?  Will it kill everything else, or is it aphid specific and what is the best type to use to be ecofriendly but effective?  Also when do I do it - is there a particular time in the aphids cycle which can be interrupted?  Do I spray it or scrub the tree (again)? All help greatly appreciated .... I've never had a big tree to be responsible for before.

I've discovered something

Flowering rose, I think you might have the same surprise flowers as I do - gorgeous and caught me by surprise too - are yours peacock orchids?  (Acidanthera and not really orchids).  I planted mine ages ago and barely noticed their foliage amidst everything else, and suddenly those lovely flowers arrived overnight.

Overwintering Geraniums ... (or pelargonium) and begonia

Will they survive inside in pots? (Oh, and fuchsia, too)
