Happy seasons greetings to all

Merry Christmas to everyone.

Sunny and cold (for a change) in South Wales (UK).

Just waiting for roasties, parnsips and stuffing to cook, then we're ready to go  -- Yay am starving now.

To feed or not to feed ???

Posted: 24/08/2014 at 12:05

hello, I have a few shrubs in very large ornamental containers that are looking a bit down. we've had a quite a dry summer (for Wales that is !!) and although I watered regularly perhaps I should have also fed them as well ???

my questions are -- should I feed them every year and should I also try and remove some of the top layer of compost and replace this with some new stuff as well ??

many thanks

Painting terracotta pots

Posted: 27/07/2014 at 21:48

hello, not sure if this is on the right thread but thought I might get a reply here as anywhere else.

I want to paint some large terracotta planters that stay outside on the patio because they're far too heavy to move anywhere else.

does anyone know where I can get some hardwearing paint that will stay on even if we happen to have a cold, maybe snowy winter.

I painted a few of my smaller pots a few years back with some nice bright shades of paint pot samples that I bought in Wilko's but because we then had two bad winters, the paint peeled off them.

I did look in Wilko's & thought I could maybe use paint for stone steps but they only had boring colours.

cheers, shaz

horsetail weed

our new driveway (tarmac) has this menace popping up through it quite regularly. got to use strong weed-killer otherwise it's everywhere before you turn around. we have to keep doing this all through the growing period as it's rampant in the field next door which belongs to the council.

we've also had it growing through the pavement at the bottom of our property, unfortunately, it's as bad a Knotweed which we've also had to deal with so I really sympathise with you.

good luck

Watering Dwarf Delphinium's

I would have thought that you could leave them out all night now, there's not much chance of frost now (unless you're in another country or far north of course).

are you going to plant them in the garden ???

mine are outside, have been for weeks now and we're in wet/windy South Wales. Although (for a change) it's been more like the South Coast here for a few weeks. got to make a space for them in garden now.

when you say the leaves are mottled, what colour is the mottling ???

Potted Christmas tree

hello, I bought a really mini-version of one of these a few years ago as a temporary tree before we decorated our lounge. potted it on and then left it outside for the rest of the year. because it grew so big, transplanted it into garden and now it's nearly 5ft tall !!! it's doing really well, has put on a lot of growth this year as well.

am definitely NOT bringing it back inside.

good luck with yours

hello, if you happen to be in a part of the UK that is currently getting really warm weather at the moment, I'd be watering this every day or at least every other day.

I'd also check for creepy crawlies around the plant although they don't usually have many problems, if it doesn't get any better, maybe it was poorly before you bought it and has only just come to light. you could wait another week or so, then if it doesn't improve, take it back to the shop.
