Is this correct ???

Posted: 19/07/2013 at 21:36

hello, i have acquired two small plants which were substituted by a garden centre because the plants i ordered were not availabe. the description is the White Valerian which is good for wildlife but unfortunately, from what i can gather, these plants are going to grow to an astronomical size and i'm not sure where to site them.

if they are going to grow really big, they're going to have to put up with an extremely exposed site that gets buffeted by the wind as we live behind school playing fields and have no trees to shelter us from the weather.

can someone tell me if i am correct and what will the eventual size be of these plants ???

Why is this happening ???

hello, i have a purple cotinus that has put on new growth but it looks green instead of purple. it's really strange but the new growth is at the bottom of the plant.

i don't know why this has happened as it's never done this before, can anyone tell me what the problem could be ??????

Strawberries in the greenhouse?

Posted: 19/07/2013 at 21:24

my strawberries have been in large containers for over three years now. we had a terrible year (weatherwise) the last two years and just forgot to get rid of them. they sent out runners which took hold in the garden (well drained/sandy soil) and this year to my utter amazement, the pots produced loads of fruit -- not as much as two kilos but enough to keep me and OH supplied, and so did the plants in the garden. they were yummy !!!

i did absolutely nothing to either the pots or ground (no feed/water), let nature take its own course. am not sure what disease they pick up and to be quite honest (i'm ashamed to say) the pots are actually full of weeds, but still seem ok. i am inclined not to worry too much about them as even though i have an unheated greenhouse, only the tender pots get put in there for the winter.

Empty Planters

thanks for the reply. i'm a bit confused about what you say regarding the conditions that Box prefer as i always see them in large containers, usually outside someone's front doors. they're never in shade and as they're in pots, probably not moist enough either, that's why i thought i'd try them myself.

anyway, will have a look at the plant you've suggested.

thanks, shaz

Empty Planters

Hello, i have two large square ornamental planters that i planted up with Box pyramids. I've just removed these because although they looked nice, they didn't seem to be doing very well and have now put them in the garden instead.

I would like to replace them with something else, something that doesn't mind being in a very large container. These are the conditions where they will be situated -- very exposed patio, no surrounding trees, they would have to tolerate very high winds as we are behind the school playing fields as well.

All suggestions welcome, thanks

PS -- they can't be too tall because of the wind

hello, i'm no expert but mine didn't flower properly until i trained it to gro across the fence as well as upwards. perhaps you also need to water it more in this heatwave as even the soil below ground will dry up much quicker than usual. i never fed mine with anything either and it was given to me by a friend so didn't have a huge rootball to start with either.

good luck

What is this and is it salvageable?

if you're not keen on the plant, why not give it away to someone else who be in need of it.

i post mine on Gumtree under Freebies and they go like hot cakes, i've just got rid of lots of china pots that i've bought over many years and no longer need and also plants that i've dug up and no longer have space for.

just a thought if you're really not keen on it

Can anybody identify this?

oh i don't know i've seen and had much worse -- Japanese knotweed, marestail etc, your weed isn't that bad compared to mine LOL

is it really a weed, can't you dig it up and stick it somewhere else out of harms way ???

Non-flowering lupins

Posted: 08/07/2013 at 22:15

hello, that's really odd, have never heard of that before. all my lupins were small when bought two years ago and virtually flowered the same year.

how tall are they now and have you looked into the centre of the plant to see if there are any flower stalks at all ??

if it was me, i'd be having a good rummage around the plant if all the others around it are doing ok.

hope this helps
