Talkback: Giant beetles

I think the Stag Beetles are amazing but a little scary when they suddenly fly up as you walk by them! We have lots of them in our Sussex village and we look out for them at this time every year :)

Acer problems

Yes, they've always been in ericaceous, as both our local garden centres advised me thats what they needed! and I've been quite diligent watering them! Green one now has only 2 leaves, very sad

Acer problems

Hi all,

I have 2 acers, one green and one dark red (don't know the names as they were from bargain bench in local garden centre 2 years ago and had no labels!) They are both in big pots in ericaceous compost. They are in shade most of the day apart from a few hours in the morning, and right beside the house so fairly sheltered. About a month ago the green one's leaves started going brown and shrivelling up, and all the branch tips are dying back. Now its happening to the red one too I have no idea what might be wrong or what to do, any ideas please? Thanks.

Patio Apple/Pear Tree

You can buy mixed trees so that bit sounds fine but not sure about the pollination as apples normally need another apple froom the right group, and pears another pear to pollinate them (unless they are a self fertile variety of course!) Not sure if this helps you or not really!

Shade loving plants

How about Azaleas or Rhodedendrons, or for smaller plants try ferns or Heucheras.

water saving

I personally would use it on ornamental plants but not anything I was planning to eat. We use washing up water/bath water etc on ornamentals and it seems fine.

Onions are easy to grow as long as you keep them weed free as they don't like competing! Good luck!

Rust on garlic

Posted: 01/01/2012 at 18:45

Hi, for the last 2 years my garlic has grown really well until about April/May and then got really bad rust resulting in very small bulbs. Any ideas how to stop it happening this year? I live in Sussex, and water them well, and rotate where I grow stuff. Thanks
