Raised Beds - green manure or plant quick crop?

Posted: 14/07/2013 at 18:29

Today i harvested all my sugar snaps, beetroot and shallots and i have about 50% of my raised bed empty.  I noticed in a couple of the garden mags, mention of green manure.

I dont know anything about it and wondered if there is one type that is better than another, be it price, speed, quality of results for next year etc.

So could anyone give me some advice on what i should be looking to plant, i intend to do the whole raised bed eventually, should i do the free space now or plant some quick growing salad for now and then do the green manure once everything is out?

Changing soil with chilli plants

Posted: 12/07/2013 at 11:21

Does seem very late to me, i have full grown chillies on most of my plants waiting for them to ripen.

To give them any chance of being ready i would suggest keeping them inside the house or in the greenhouse.  3-4 months time when they should be ready will be October/November and it may be too cold then.

Can anybody identify this?

Cayenne Peppers - Pot Size

I have a few cayenne peppers growing which are only in litre pots, i feed and water them regularly and there are lots of fruits on them now (i did have an issue with them not polinating but took to using a paint brush to do it myself)

So they are all coming along nicely, but ive read in a few magazines that ideals pots are 5-10 litre, as everything is going ok at the moment, should i just leave them, or would it be advisable to pot them?

From looking at the roots it appears they could do with potting on, but with space limited and the crop coming along nicely, i was wondering if it was ok to just let them get on with it.

Confession- slug olympics

Slugs go in the brown bin, yes they climb up and i find them on the lid, but they just get ejected back to the bottom until they depart.

Snails on the other hand get drop kicked as far as possible into the field behind my house, not sure if they make it back or not, but i do enjoy volleying them as far as possible.
