Watering dormant plants in an unheated shed

Posted: 22/10/2012 at 13:22

Water sparingly- if at all-cold and wet will see of more plants that just cold-so it is best not too

There are instances of pelargoniums just being wrapped in newspaper over the winter and left like that until the spring-so they really do not need much water

Have any of you tried straw as a winter mulch ?

I fear you will either end up with a soggy mat-full of unwelcome visitors- or it will blow all over the place

Far better to let it rot down in the compost heap-any thing that rots down in the soil tends to deplete the nitrogen content.

Do the young runners need any special treatment or feed after planting out ? I just got rid of a load of old plants and only have the babies left, will I get fruit next year ?

Do not feed now-you should get fruit next year but they are better in years 2 and 3-then they start to decline so it is a good idea to keep replacing.

Talkback: How to mulch your beds and borders

If you apply a mulch to the borders it is best around plants- but even if you cover the crown I have found the new shoots tend to grow through anyway

Not sure what you mean by six years?

Strawberries are traditionally cut back hard after flowering-though I wouldn't describe it as pruning-the fruits you have now are unlikely to ripen on the plant- it is too cold-I would pick them off bring them indoors and they might ripen

Don't cut the plants back again and but do remove any recent runners that may have formed.

It is not going to get that warm next week-at most mid to high teens and cloudy

Frost in October/November- not exactly brain surgery and coming weeks means any time in the future
