That does not look like swede leaves to me-it looks a bit like potato leaves-is that likely-from peelings in compost or previous crop?

Actually those are not "seed" leaves at all

Sorry- perhaps I haven't made myself clear-ants aren't the culprit-aphids are-the ants feed of the sugar secretions of the aphid-so if you see ants then there are aphids- you need to control the aphids.

Uncurl a leaf-what do you see?-if it isn't aphid it might be a caterpillar

I doubt that ants are responsible for the damage on your clematis either.

Have you uncurled a leaf-I find that this usually a sign of aphid attack-are there signs of any ants farming aphids?
