What do you have in a cold frame currently ?

Posted: 14/06/2016 at 14:31

I have chillies in mine. They are Hot Patio Sizzle, a small variety and won't grow very tall.  Always do well that way.   Also  2 tomato plants in pots with that section of lid removed.  And I have just sown foxgloves seeds into a tray which the packet suggests to start in a coldframe.  Good luck with your coldframe.  Mags

How can I stop slugs and snails eating my Hosta?

Posted: 13/06/2016 at 18:05

I heard one of the radio gardening  experts say you shouldn't chop slugs with scissors. Slugs contain something toxic to some plants and you transfer this substance to the scissors when you release the slug innards. This can't be washed off the scissors easily even after you get the slime off. Don't know if that is true!  I drop slugs into a bag with a tablespoon of salt in it!   Mags

Weeds??

When in doubt, wait until it flowers.  If you like it then regard it as a plant.  If you don't like it then it's a weed!  The last picture - I call that a weed.  Don't know about the others!  Cheers,  Mags

Tulips

I should also add the cups are much smaller!

I was going to ask the same question. Mine have been white with huge cups for 8-9 years. This year all yellow.  Can I do anything to persuade them to revert to white?  Mags

Reusing potting soil

And before you reuse the pots drill some Large holes in the base!

Maybe it is a bit early in the season for many flowers?    Tomato fertilizer will encourage flowers to develop, I think.  Mags

fungi identification please

I'm not worried about them - just curious as I've never seen these ones.  I wouldn't dream of eating them, and would put on rubber gloves to handle them.  Mags

fungi identification please

Several fungi/toadstool have appeared in both front and back lawn. Can anyone put a name to them?  the cap is very dark brown and the biggest at 1.5 ins diameter, the gills are dark brown and the stem is brown and they stand about 1.5 ins above the grass. Sorry, I can't supply a photo.  I've searched several websites but can't find them!  Help appreciated,  Thank you, Mags

Bird song is back

It seems that the colouring of several birds (presumably males) have become much brighter. We have quite a lot of  Goldfinches and some are noticeably brighter yellow than others. Even some sparrows seem to have blacker heads than normal!  Mags
