Pruning a Salix Flamingo

Posted: 17/05/2014 at 10:44

Is it to late in year to prune a Salix Flamingo ( hakuro nishiki).  I've looked at a couple of websites and they say Mar-Apl, after last frosts. Well, here in Staffordshire we are only just clear of the time for frosts, although it is several weeks since we actually had one.  Many thanks, Mags

Camelia query

Posted: 17/05/2014 at 10:02

Should I remove the branches from a camellia that are hanging onto the ground?  Someone told me that I should as leaving them encourages 'nasties' into the bush. I quite like them hanging down, but if the plant would be better if trimmed down there then I will do it.   It is 10 years old and about 4ft tall.  Many thanks.  Mags

chilli re-potting

Mattbeer's pots are the size I will use when I pot mine on, probably this weekend.  If the pot isn't big enough the chilli plants won't grow properly.   Mags

chilli re-potting

Hi. A 4" pot seems very small.  My chilli plants are  6"  tall and I will re-pot them on Wednesday.  Mine are Hot Patio Sizzle variety which don't grow tall but if you have jalapeno they grow taller and will need staked.  They will go into pots about 8" or 9".  I always put my Patio Sizzle outside from end May, but I found the jalapeno I  had last year didn't do very well outside so I think they need a greenhouse or really bright windowsill.

I have heard that allowing them to wilt will make the chillis hotter.   Good luck with your plant.  Mags

Suitable place for acer?

Thanks Verdun.  I will follow your advice.  My neighbour has done the best he can with the roots, and better than I expected.  Mags

Suitable place for acer?

A neighbour is digging out the remains of a leylandii, from where it has been for 20+ years. If I fill the hole with ericaceous compost will it be ok to plant a small acer there?  Thanks for help.  Mags

Bluetit & Parsley

Posted: 27/04/2014 at 14:44

Today I watched a bluetit pecking frantically at my parsley, then the little bird flew away with a sprig of parsley in its beak - quite a large sprig for a small bird.  Why?  I've seen bluetits on that plant in the past and assumed it was after insects, but this is the first time I've seen it take parsley away!  Anyone know?

I have heard that starlings will take bits of herbs to act as an insecticide in the nest so do bluetits (and other birds) do the same?  Mags

Big Begonias

I've got lots of shoot on all 5 of them.  BUT this happened last year and then only on shoot on each did well to give lots of flower - then the broke in August and Sept.  Howerver, I've found one of last years corms just starting to sprout so I will experiment with that as it's a different colour so I don't really want it  and can afford to sacrifice it! Many thanks all, Mags

Matty,  Would pinching out the tip when the main is growing well encourage the corm to produce more shoots from the corm then?  Mags
