Bird Boxes

Posted: 16/11/2012 at 10:40

I would like to put up a bluetit box and a sparrow box set.   Must they be emptied out and cleaned regularly?  I have good places to site one of each but would have to get someone to put them up, and then I wouldn't be able to reach them for 'maintenance'. Should I go ahead and get boxes put up?  Advice welcome, thanks, Maggie

Thanks Alina W. You have reasured me that I can spray my bay nobilis to try to rid it of whatever bug is folding over the leaves. I will gather and dry some good leaves first to use for the next 3+ months.  Maggie

Can I reuse, or should I discard?

Posted: 15/10/2012 at 17:29

Thanks for your replies.  I always store everything in the garage overwinter. The pots were new this year so this time I will give the pots a wash with Jeyes Fluid and store them outside. The stakes I will throw away as they are old. And the compost is always new. Thanks again.  Maggie

Can I reuse, or should I discard?

I always keep the stakes to reuse next year. But is this a good idea?  Every year my tomatoes get Blight. And what about the containers I grow the tomatoes in? I always  wash these out before storing. Thanks for advice. Maggie

Gardeners' Question Time

Posted: 04/09/2012 at 10:29

I listen to Radio 4 Gardners Question time most weeks.  Some local BBC radio stations also have good gardening programmes - I listen to BBC R.Leicester Down to Earth which is on most Sundays at 12.00. I like that because it is more general to the area to my home. I've picked up very helpful tips from both programmes.  Maggie

Grey Water

Posted: 03/09/2012 at 17:30

I have heard that it is ok to use bath water and washing machine rinsing water in the garden. Does this include water that has soaps, body wash/oils/radox?  Is it ok to use  only that for watering pots all the time?   I know this will have been asked before but I can't find a searching section on  the forum - sorry. Thanks, Maggie

Using rusty tools

I have been given an old galvanised watering can, but there is a lot of rust in the bottom. It is watertight.  Is it ok to use?  Anything the rustiness will do good or anything it will do harm?  Very many thanks, Maggie
