Hyacinths

Posted: 26/10/2013 at 13:00

There are 2 side shoots on 1 of my hyacinths.  Should I remove them, and if so what's the best way to do it?  All the bulbs in the bowl are growing well and evenly. It is just this 1 bulb with the side shoots. What effect will it have if I leave them grow?   Thanks for advice, Mags

Interesting question MartinGT.  Those answers have been helpful to me, too.  Thanks everyone, Maggie

I have 7ft tall lillies that give a wonderful smell on warm evenings as we had earlier in the month. Sadly, the flowers have finished now - but I know they will come back next year.  I have had them for about 7 years and they overwinter just fine with no attention needed.  Sorry, but I don't know the variety but the brand was Taylors.   Maggie

I agree with you, Lavender Lady.      It's perfect for the average have-a-go gardener, but I can well understand that those with plenty of experience and knowledge won't  be happy with it!    Maggie

Oh - so is that the only reason?                  I could use multi-purpose then?  Mags

What is the benefit of bulb fibre over multi-purpose compost for my prepared hyacinths? (and I presume, any indoor grown bulbs).   I've got my bulbs and multi-purpose compost.  Should I go and buy a largish bag of something I only want a little of?   Thanks, Mags

courgettes

Thanks John.  Mine are outside but rather squashed in beside other plants and don't have very much room. Maybe there is not a lot of circulation.  They were ok last year. Maybe the variety is rather sensitive.   I will have to re-think for where they go next year.  I've got GQT recorded - I'd better listen to it.  Thanks, Maggie

courgettes

My yellow courgettes (Goldrush) are rotting at the flower end and the rot extends down the centre of the courgette. This happens when the fruit gets to 4 or 5 inches in size.  I've seen what happen when they are not fertilized - this is something different.  Any ideas for the reason, please?  I have been giving them liquid tomato feed.  Maggie

garlic

A garlic has grown in the garden. Where it came from I don't know!   I first noticed it when it produced a tall stem with what looked like a seed head on top.  Can I eat the garlic that has grown in the ground?   It looks and smells like garlic - what else could it be?  Maggie

thanks all.  I will toss a couple of spadeful in the compost and find a few worms to help the bags along.  Maggie
