Bluetit & Parsley

Posted: 27/04/2014 at 14:44

Today I watched a bluetit pecking frantically at my parsley, then the little bird flew away with a sprig of parsley in its beak - quite a large sprig for a small bird.  Why?  I've seen bluetits on that plant in the past and assumed it was after insects, but this is the first time I've seen it take parsley away!  Anyone know?

I have heard that starlings will take bits of herbs to act as an insecticide in the nest so do bluetits (and other birds) do the same?  Mags

Big Begonias

I've got lots of shoot on all 5 of them.  BUT this happened last year and then only on shoot on each did well to give lots of flower - then the broke in August and Sept.  Howerver, I've found one of last years corms just starting to sprout so I will experiment with that as it's a different colour so I don't really want it  and can afford to sacrifice it! Many thanks all, Mags

Matty,  Would pinching out the tip when the main is growing well encourage the corm to produce more shoots from the corm then?  Mags

Big Begonias

When my begonias get bigger should I pinch out the tip of the main growing shoot?  Last year they just kept growing from the one shoot (on each plant) and got so long most of them broke of. It happened on 4 out of 5 plants.   Yes, I know it might be a silly question, and I can't find anything about this so what's to be done?  Many thanks Mags.

You might as well leaves the bees to enjoy the box.  I doubt if birds would use it anyway if you use the shed much, as I think the constant toing and froing would probably be to disturbing for them.  Then move the box to somewhere more peaceful when the bees have departed.    I could be wrong about the birds, of course!  Mags

crown imperal lillies

I have 2 crown imperials. They were lovely last year and this year just one is going to flower.  They are adjacent, treated the same with feed and horse manure after flowering last year.  Is there any way I can persuade them both to flower next year?  Many thanks, Mags

Is your question about planting out  Primulas, Pansies and Ivy?  I am sure the answers are Yes, Yes and Yes.  Don't forget ivy can go a bit wild, primulas will come pack year after year and pansies tend to be treated as annuals.   Thant's my inexpert opinion, anyway.    Mags

This is a great website and everyone is very helpful.  You will soon get to know who the experts are - and I'm not one of them!  They have put me right many times.

What did you want to know Anne?

Parsley help

I have a parsley that came from a supermarket  'windowsill herbs' pot.  It has done well for the past 4 years.  It is in free draining soil. I pay no attention to it except to gather plentiful quantities of the stuff.  But I don't think Staffordshire will get as cold as Scotland ..................   For what the supermarket pots cost it's worth a go.  I also have thyme and chives which have thrived for years.  Mags
