aquelegia flowering now

Posted: 13/11/2013 at 10:17

At end August I bought a sad aquelegia for 50p. Re-potted and nursed so it is now a lovely big healthy plant. But it has a lot of flowers and more comming. It is in the coldframe facing east and quite sheltered. How do I care for it now?  Will it overwinter in coldframe, garage or should it come in to the house. I am in Staffordshire.   Any tips appreciated. Thank you, Maggie

whats eating my christmas rose leaves??

Posted: 10/11/2013 at 14:25

My Christmas Rose has an abundance of flowers ready to open, many already showing quite a lot of white petals.  It just might be in flower over Christmas this year.

About cutting the leaves off, I heard that they should be binned  and not composted because of any disease.

whats eating my christmas rose leaves??

Not an answer to your question, but does it matter?

I've just cut all the leaves from all 3 of my helibores (one is a Christmas Rose).  There will be very few new leaves grow over the winter and when the flowers come in spring they stand proud above whatever new leaves there are, then the leaves grow over the summer.  Hope I do the right thing with them but it seems to work ok for me.  Mags

Oh, GillyL, No..no.. I don't want soaps. The presenters on Autumn watch are better than that.   We all have our taste  - I know and I'm pleased that many viewers love it.  I know it is ME that is out of step with the majority.  Mags.

Like Obelixx, I get fed up with the silliness.  And I tried IPlayer but as I have to use the laptop it looses a lot on the small monitor.  I found the bit about the worms interesting, and I watch it to see the bits about creatures that aren't usually mentioned.  I'm please it was on for only 4 nights, that was enough of watching the presenters silly antics.  Mags

Hyacinths

Thanks Dove.  I will leave  them on.

My father always grew hyacinths every Christmas and I hated the smell.  He died 12 years ago, in January.  Next Christmas I grew them 'for Dad'  and I've loved hyacinths and grown them ever since. !!

Hyacinths

There are 2 side shoots on 1 of my hyacinths.  Should I remove them, and if so what's the best way to do it?  All the bulbs in the bowl are growing well and evenly. It is just this 1 bulb with the side shoots. What effect will it have if I leave them grow?   Thanks for advice, Mags

Interesting question MartinGT.  Those answers have been helpful to me, too.  Thanks everyone, Maggie

I have 7ft tall lillies that give a wonderful smell on warm evenings as we had earlier in the month. Sadly, the flowers have finished now - but I know they will come back next year.  I have had them for about 7 years and they overwinter just fine with no attention needed.  Sorry, but I don't know the variety but the brand was Taylors.   Maggie

I agree with you, Lavender Lady.      It's perfect for the average have-a-go gardener, but I can well understand that those with plenty of experience and knowledge won't  be happy with it!    Maggie
