djjjuk - just have a go.  ok, so you won't get award-winning fruit but it will be lovely to go and pick them fresh from the vines and they do taste better than supermarket supplies.   Maggie

Djjjuk, yes you can grow tomatoes outside.  I grow lovely ones in troughs using multipurpose compost under my east facing kitchen window.  I feed them with a proprietry tomato feed from when fist fruits form.  I am on the other side of B'ham to you - near Tamworth.  They do better there than if I put them against a fence facing south.  Good luck!  Maggie

There are several varieties on sale. Which do people think are best for using in salads?  I've had Pentland Javelin but wasn't  keen.  To be grown in potato sacks. And when is the right time at start to chit?   Thanks for your opinions, Maggie

hyacinth flowers

I note what you say, nutcutlet, but I was careful with the watering.  I have grown them successfully for the past 12 years, and am sure I did nothing different this year..  And no, they definitely were not too warm.

I know I could possibly have bought them cheaper but I like the challenge! I will buy some next week, and there's always next year!

hyacinth flowers

I have a bowl of 6 hyacinth bulbs, - 2 packs of 3 all same variety. All 6 seemed to be doing well then flowers on 3 have shrivelled as they are forming, and now a 4th has started to go as well.  The shrivelled flower stem has mould at  the bottom of the stem and the stem fell out when I touched it.  Another bowl planted a month later is starting to produce flowers normally.  What could be the problem with the first lot?  I am sure they had enough water!  Diseased bulbs or something I might have done, or not done?  I grow hyacinths every year and never had this problem before.  Maggie

Alstromarea

Great information from you all.  I have heavy clay soil here so I will keep it in the pot instead of putting out as I planned to.  And Leave it in a sheltered place for the winter, moving it if it turns very cold.  Thank you all.  Mags

Alstromarea

At end August I bought a sad ALSTROMAREA for 50p. Re-potted and nursed so it is now a lovely big healthy plant. But it has a lot of flowers and more comming. It is in the coldframe facing east and quite sheltered. How do I care for it now?  Will it overwinter in coldframe, garage or should it come in to the house. I am in Staffordshire. Temp went down to -0.5% last in garden.   Any tips appreciated. Thank you, Maggie

With apologies to the two who responded when I called it an aquelegia which are very hardy.
