'Dead' soil

Posted: 22/05/2015 at 16:37

Thanks for your reply.  Both packets of seed came free with a magazine. They are T&M seed or Fothergills seed.  I want the all the plants for this year only. The Rudbeckias I sowed this year and the Cant Bells last year.  I will use this Garden centre compost now, and horse manure in the autumn.  Mags

'Dead' soil

I've just pulled up the wallflowers and the soil is very dry and not a worm to be seen.  I intend to plant Rudbeckia  and Canterbury Bells plants in the empty border. Would it be helpful if I dig in a bag of Farmyard Manure that I bought from the Garden Centre?   Thank you for any advice, Mags

cleaning bird feeders

Haha Mrac, I carelessly used boiling water on a plastic feeder. It went out of shape and couldn't be re-assembled!   Thanks everyone, for your replies.

YES. everyone, beware of feeders that cannot be taken completely apart for cleaning.

Edd,  I wondered about bleach.  Ok, just a few drop to a bowl of hot sudsy water then rinse very well and leave to dry (I always do anyway).  Thanks very much, Mags

cleaning bird feeders

I keep hearing that we should use a sterilising/antiseptic wash for seed feeders and bird tables.  Is this correct?   What should I use - are any household products ok to use?  I don 't want to use anything harmful. I've always used hot water with a squirt of washing up liquid (the sort that is kind to my hands!)  and cleaned them regularly.  Thank you, Mags

The second image showing Molloy's is the compost I wondered about.  I've read the other posts on another series of letters but none mention this particular compost. Does any have any experience of it?  Maggie

A local Garden Centre is offering 4 x 50 litre bags Molloy's multipurpose  compost (made by Erin) for £10.  Has anyone used this, and is it ok?  As it is made by Erin I assume it contains peat - can anyone confirm this as I want to buy compost and want one with peat in it. Many thanks to anyone who can comment.  Maggie

My 5 year old pot of them never flowered. I told them last year was their last chance and threw some tomato feed at them.  Bingo - they flowered!  I think it is just patience!
