Lily deteriated

Posted: 03/07/2015 at 14:03

Thanks Cathy.  Yes, I know they do revert. I've had several years of immense pleasure from the original planting and want to give new bulbs the best chance I can. I think I really want to know if I should dig in some manure - well-rotted farmyard stuff I've been given.  I think the soil is quite impoverished now. Mags

Lily deteriated

I bought a lovely lily bulb about 12 years ago. The flowers were ivory with speckles, a beautiful fragrance and 6 - 7 foot tall. It grew to be a large clump.   Now the flowers are plain orange, no smell and 5 foot tall.  I have given it general feed regularly and horse manure annually.  How should I prepare the area for when I replace with  new lily bulbs so I once again have lovely flowers I once had?    Thank you for advice. Thanks a lot for the info!  Fortunately the leaf gobblers don't seem to like the stems!  Mags

damaged rhubarb leaves

Something is eating my rhubarb leaves.  The young leaves are stripped to the veins and spine, but older leaves have big holes in them.  Would this be slug damage? Or what else eats them?  I'm not bothered about it as I am getting plenty of stems for my use, but I'm curious.  Thanks, Mags

How sad!  I sprayed mine with Provado Ultimate Bug Killer when the shoots were about 12 inches high the do it about every 6 weeks.  The buds are all forming well.  There are some holes in the leaves indicating that they have had a go at the plants though.  I never find any lily beetles either, although I do look every time I walk past which is several times a day.  I suggest you spray them now and again later to help protect the bulbs for next year. Good luck for next year.  Mags

Dachalover  -  What huge bees you have!.     I've always know those as BATS..

I wish I could see bats around my S Staffordshire garden!  I used to see them, but not any more, sadly.   Mags

Straggly Geum

Posted: 10/06/2015 at 20:10

Thanks everyone.  It seems that it is doing what this variety does although I don't know what variety it is - I bought it on the market and the label said Red Geum.  Yes, it is red and it is a geum.  It wasn't anywhere near as tall last year which was its first year.  It seems to be established now. I will put a wire support round it.  Thank-you, all ,   Mags

Straggly Geum

The stems on my geum ate  3 - 4  feet long and flog across the everything beside it.  Is this how they normally grow or should I do something to it?  Other than staking it, that is.  Mags
