Is it a Robin?

Posted: 23/12/2015 at 13:47

Thanks very much Dovefromabove.  That's what it is.   I thought Dunnocks are ground feeders only so I am wrong    about that!  Best wishes of the Season, Mags

Is it a Robin?

Posted: 23/12/2015 at 13:24

I have a small bird visiting the feeder with the sunflower hearts. It is just like the robin (who also likes the sunflower hearts). It is just like the robin the way it twitches and bobs and is the same shade of brown and size as a robin but has no sign of any red feathers. Is it a robin?  What else could it be?  I see it regularly. Many thanks, Mags

Feeding Amarylis

Those Amaryllis (hardy) Sonatini look lovely.  I am going to look out for them in my local garden centre.

As for the friend who cut the leaves off - he's done it now and probably at least some of the bulbs will be ok.  Not sure about splitting the clump but I would guess the time to do it is just after the leaves die back or before/just as the bulbs are starting into growth for the new season.  But with your friends clump they may not flower next year.  This is all guesswork as I am no expert!  Good luck.   Mags

I thought amaryllis are houseplants?  I'm guessing you must be in Cornwall?   I once planted one outside after it had finished flowering in spring and the slugs ate most of it!  Sorry I can't help you.  Mags

Lilies in pot

Yes, definitely 5 inches.  I think they came from a local discount shop (Home Bargains) although I can't be sure. That's why I am concerned that in such a small pot there is not enough protection for the bulbs.    I can move to a bigger pot and keep in coldframe or plant out.  I think the ground is still suitable here in S.Staffordshire.  Mags

A month ago someone gave me a 5" pot with 4 flowering lilies in it which I would like to regrow next year. Stargazer type. Should I Plant in garden now, keep in cold frame or in garage to plant out in spring? I put in cold frame when  flowers died off.The leaves have dropped off and stems going yellow now.  Thanks in advance for help, Mags

Spratts for tea

JO47 ------------ I am a 'cat' person too. Maybe that's why I enjoy Spratts.  However, I offered 1 to next doors cat and she turned up her nose at it!  Fussy pussy!  Mags.  PS my Spratts were delicious with cue & onion in vinegar and brown B&b

Thanks both.  The watercress & grapefruit sounds great.  So I will keep that in mind for next time.

I have cue and a red onion available so that's what I will have.  It will perk up the bread&butter.    Ohhhhh   ..... I am looking forward to my tea!  Mags
